while we were putting away jecobie's "baby
toys", to make room for his "toddler toys", pistoy suddenly starts
playing with the baby toys, as if to say goodbye to them. the first toy
he picked up is the first rattle toy that made him laugh as a baby.
is this a preview of the many "graduations" to the stages in his life?
natatawa ako na naiiyak kanina. joys (and pains) of parenthood. =)
he picked up a microphone, and few more. then, he probably sensed that we're not putting away everything. so he moved on to the ones that we're leaving out, and started playing with them, as if to assure them "don't worry, i won't let mommy take you away, i'll play with you and they'll see i still like you around". *lol* tawa kami nang tawa ni je. hay naku, sa tatay pa nagmana! whenever i ask je to clear up stuff, he would reason out why he still needs it, even though i haven't seen him use the stuff for at least half a year. jecobie's the same. he hasn't touched some of the toys for months, then suddenly he is super interested.
anyway, so we took out a full 3-layer drawer of toys, and some small stuffed toys. pistoy is never a stuff toy kind of kid. he never had a lovey either. we just kept the big ones that he says good night to, like puppy dog, bunny and giraffe. wait, those are not common nouns, those are their names. =P
as the year ends, i feel like we need to sort out a lot stuff. his old baby clothes are in a box in the room's "attic". i recently retired a lot of clothes too. i need to organize them into boxes in case we need them in the future.
anyway, after the toy ordeal is done, jecobie just went to his pillow, lied down belly first, and fell asleep. he probably wanted to sleep the sadness off. well, we're not putting the toys away to the attic, we're just moving it to the guest bedroom. it will be accessible and easy to get to if we need to bring out toys when we have guests with kids. and of course, when jecobie misses his baby toys. or mommy/daddy misses seeing jecobie with his baby toys. whichever comes first. =P

second year
i totally missed updating this blog. primarily due to the numerous things in the way, like work, household chores, preps for holidays and parties and papa's exodus, and general laziness and procrastination. =P
we recently celebrated pistoy's 2nd birthday. last Dec.8, 54 people packing inside our home and parteyed until Pacquiao hit the canvass face-first. =P yep, since we got food, and people are coming over, we decided to hold the pacquiao-fight-viewing at our place too. =)
updates.....
counting
pistoy can "sort of" count 1-10 na! well, technically, he can recite the numbers in order from 1 to 10. when there are pictures of anything you want him to count, you need to be the one to point to the items, and he will count until your fingers pause on the last item. if you try to make him count on his own, he will point to one item, lose his focus, point to another item which is far from the one he just counted, and then lose his place. he will then be counting endlessly. *lol* it took us a while to realize this. hahaha!
potential yaya
one of our pinoy friend's (billy) mother is available to watch over kids during the weekdays. last May lang sya nag-move dito sa US, and nag-aalaga lang sya ng mga apo nya. kinapalan na naman ang face namin at humingi ng favor if she can watch over pistoy for 4-5 hours twice a week. the set-up would be daddy je will drop pistoy off at their place before heading to work (11-ish), and i will pick him up after work (4-ish). we seriously don't know the going rate for babysitters in our area, but since this is just a sort of "to pass time" thing since she's just at home watching tv during the day, we figured we could probably go a few dollars less than the real going rate? that's my cheap side talking, but at this point, we will definitely pay whatever's the rate just to have someone who speaks Tagalog, who has the same Filipino values, and whom we know and can trust to watch over pistoy.
last week, we spent 3 days at their place around the time when we'll leave him. daddy je or i were there, just to help pistoy familiarize himself with the place and "lola grace". kilala kasi namin siya, once he gets traumatized sa isang lugar or isang tao, he won't trust them anymore. so we erred on the side of caution and sacrificed 3 days. on the third day, i left the house and stayed outside for an hour to see how he'd take it. sabi ni lola grace, hindi naman daw ako hinanap. umupo lang sa rocking chair, nanood ng eat bulaga, at kumain ng goldfish. pistoy was trying to get comfortable on the floor for his afternoon nap when i went back in. he seemed so happy to see me, kwento nang kwento na di ko naman ma-gets. hehehe! then we drove back home and he seemed ok.
it really looks promising. i know i probably shouldn't post about this or i'll jinx it. but i also want to ask for help to pray for pistoy to be comfortable enough around lola grace. and, with the long Christmas break, i hope the 3 days last week are not for nothing. =P
hitting
this is my biggest issue with pistoy recently. he learned how to hit. how, i'm not sure, but i have an idea. pag nadadapa kasi si pistoy, or tumatama somewhere, papa norbie will hit the "offending" area (the floor, the chair, etc) and say "ump!". sanay naman tayo sa ganon, sa pinas kasi yun ang usual na ginagawa right? but then, pistoy misunderstood the context. he thought anything that displeases him deserves to be hit. *gawd, heaven help us reverse this!*
we're trying the "firm voice, say 'no hitting'" thing. since pistoy is used to us being all "verbal" when he's behaving well, once he hits, we say "no hitting", holds his hands tight in front of him, pauses and won't talk to him for a few seconds. then we follow up with "magsorry ka na, kiss mo <insert hitting victim here>". he would kiss, but he won't say sorry.
i don't know what else to do!
momma janey and daddy oneal witnessed this when we went out to dinner at Orlando. we were in the van, oneal said or did something (i can't remember), and jecobie hits him! it's so frustrating to us too... he would make amends later, but it doesn't make him stop from hitting in the first place!
he hits just for the motion of it, i think. he doesn't hit hard naman. but still, it's hitting! nung nakausap ko si papa about this, sabi ko this is his fault. =P sabi nya ilalakad nya daw ng paluhod at ipagdadasal nya na tumigil na. in the meantime, we need a method that works. not for reactive results, but proactive.
bday party
so. whatever happened in the 1 week before Dec.8, i have blurred memories na. all i know is i cooked leche flan, crema de fruta, chicken sopas, menudo and lumpiang shanghai. papa cooked his signature beef with mushroom, and ribs with tausi. i ordered pizza, chicken wings, pansit bihon and dinuguan. we ordered a small half-marble-half-chocolate cake with buttercream icing and a circus train topper. =) jecobie loved the toy train topper btw. hehehe! perfect choice!
on the day itself, we prepped everything ourselves, even blowing the balloons! well, we got the kit with the helium tank, but still, we did the tying and stuff. =)
it was fun, both the preps and the party itself. i just wish we had more time to prepare. andami ko tuloy nakalimutang ilabas agad. like yung crema de fruta, at yung sopas nakalimutan kong banggitin sa iba. we left the sopas kasi sa range, so it stays warm.
speaking of staying warm, i will have to invest in food warmers eventually. especially since december ang bday ni pistoy. heheheh! buti na lang, lahat ng guests namin ay family, ka-close, at mga cowboys. so when they get their food, their just march over to our microwave and reheat it. not the perfect way to serve food at parties. =P either we get the food warmer na sinasaksak, or yung nilalagyan ng flame sa ilalim. hay, buhay domesticated. nag-iiba na ang problema. i never thought i would be thinking about those things in the past. it's like something that i'll leave mommy letty or mama ayet to worry about. heheheh!
as i mentioned, since we didn't have that much time to prepare, when the guests came in, it slipped my mind to bring the camera out. naalala na lang namin nung magbo-blow na ng candles. =( chinarge ko pa naman lahat ng spare batteries ng camera namin. loss! so meron lang kaming 2 vids nung cake time na. di ko man lang na-picture-an yung set up ng pagkain. how i miss my mama who are usually on top of things like that. ewan ko rin naman dito sa US, parang hindi mahilig mag-pic ang mga tao. *lol*
so. exactly 2 years and 2 weeks na si pistoy as of this writing. we planned on starting his potty training this long weekend, but we have a lot of stuff to take care of pa rin, kaya we decided to postpone it. as of today, pistoy says "pupu" when he's done. but he won't say when he's going. you can kind of tell though, he runs around a lot, with the shoulders kind of hunched. tapos maririnig mo syang umiire. the good thing is, umuupo na sya sa toilet seat ngayon pag hinuhugasan. twice he sat there and tried to poop, pero after a few minutes ayaw na. siguro namimintig ang paa nya. hehe!
that reminds me, we need to get him a step stool for wiwi-training. it's gonna be a looong journey, but we're not in a hurry. =P he'll eventually get there.

first sign of terrible two
pistoy had some sort of a meltdown last Saturday (11/17), while we were at a surprise bday part for my sis-in-law's dad.
jecobie didn't take a nap that afternoon, so he was already cranky to begin with at around 5pm (when the party started). we know it's only a matter of time before he'd explode.hehehe!
our nephew jude, was solving puzzles sa ipad nya. jecobie wants to do it too! nakikipindot! so i took out my kindle fire and loaded an animal puzzles app. while jecobie is solving a puzzle, jude joined in. pistoy suddenly screamed, held on to the kindle, and tried his best para hindi makahawak si jude. medyo hindi naiintindihan ni jude ang "no", so para kaming umaawat sa sabong. hehehe! jude keeps poking on the tablet, pistoy keeps screaming "no" (more like "wo" pa nga). pistoy finally cried buckets, and kuya pete finally subdued jude.
of course, there's a million suggestions from everybody around the table on what we have to do. i think i was more stressed by the comments from other people, than actually dealing with pistoy's meltdown. =P
we know at some point, this is going to happen. pistoy will meet a playmate who will not respect his ownership of things. welcome to the real world anak. =P in this jungle, even if you own something, it doesn't mean other people won't try to take it away from you. =P
at home, we're teaching pistoy how to share and take turns. he really is at that stage where everything is his. he used to cry when we play with (even just touch actually!) the toy train we bought him. we would say "share"... then say "pistoy's turn" and let him play. then we'll say "mommy's turn" and i'll touch the train for a very brief moment. when it's "pistoy's turn", i won't touch the toy. after around a dozen rounds, he finally got the concept.
the problem with the situation last saturday was, even when we're saying it's "pistoy's turn", jude was touching the toy. *lol* so maybe in jecobie's mind, "hey, that's not fair! it's my turn!". so when we're saying it's "jude's turn", pistoy won't let the kindle go. it wasn't really the perfect application of the "lessons" we were trying to teach him.
anyway, since then, jecobie would shout "wo!" when he doesn't want to do something. it's irritating! we try to pick our battles, but maybe it's time to bring out the stick. =P (or clear up the corner, in case we're just doing timeouts for now).
*sigh* this is another thing. i don't like punishing. but anyway, we gotta do what we gotta do.
so je and i had a brief talk that maybe next year, we need to enroll pistoy sa isang playcenter or something, so he can break into the social aspect of play. most of the time, he's ok when he's playing with grown-ups. he would even initiate by bringing his toys to them.
for now, the best we can do is bring him to playgrounds and parks where a lot of kids are also playing.
Lord help us! =)

22nd-ish month updates
guy talk
it must be a guy thing, but hubby je could understand jecobie's "sentences"!
a few days ago, they were sitting on the floor mat sa family room when jecobie pointed at the ceiling fan and said something like "nana, tsukoy-tsukoy-tikoti-kot".
translation? "ceiling fan is off".
breakdown:
nana = wala na.
tikoti-kot = ikot-ikot
also a few days ago, he said the same thing when his toy uod's wheels stopped spinning. we went crazy when we realized what he was saying! hehehe!
then yesterday, at the park, we went to see the ducks sa man-made lake, and he kept saying "kakakak tukuy an dede".
translation? "may ducks sa tubig".
breakdown:
kakakak = duck
dede = anything liquid, ergo, tubig is counted.
it's weird that je understands it and can decrypt pistoy's sentences. i dunno where the extra words came from, maybe because we use complete sentences when talking to him. so this is his version of stringing together 2 words, may palabok sa gitna. hehehe! ano bang tawag sa ganon, linking verb ba?
alphabet
pistoy can identify letters A, B, C, D, F, H and I! nalilito sya sa E (says it's F), G (says "ata" for gitara, because the book has a picture of guitar for that letter), and J (sometimes says I). i bought a board book (The Alphabet Room) and we started going through it a month ago. every page has a flip-the-page part. we don't do that yet because it can get confusing for him. so we just flip through the regular pages, and he can identify almost all the pictures. of course buyoy pa rin. but he says things consistently naman, hehe!
he can identify and say the names of apple, bowl, dog, egg, fish, guitar (ata for gitara), hat, kite, moustache (tash! hahaha!), owl, painting (pe-te), quilt (ki), snake (ek), umbrella, (ana), violin (baoin), zebra (aba). i love that book, simple lang ng illustrations. and very colorful too. pistoy would sometimes point to the background of the pic and say the name of the color. hehe!
he can identify the other animals, but instead of saying their names, he mimics yung sinasabi nila, like meow for cat, and baaa for lamb.
inglisero
today, pistoy had a haircut, and it's the first time he cried. siguro natatakot sya dun sa hairstylist kasi salita nang salita ng english. eh pinoy na pinoy si pistoy. he gets confused pag puro english ang naririnig nya.
i'm worried na pag kinailangan na namin syang ipasok sa daycare or school, he will have a hard time adjusting. but i still refuse to teach him english, maybe just expose him to it some more. hay.
UPDATES:
i realized na i started this entry more than a month ago, pero di ko pala natapos.
as of pistoy's 22nd month, he can identify all the (uppercase) letters of the alphabet!!! i'm one proud momma! hehehe! i dunno how he looks at things, pero parang multi-dimentional nya narerecognize ang mga bagay. recently, he pointed to a small letter "b" and said "P!" *lol* kaya naman the first time he saw the alphabet train sa youtube, he called "W" an "M". that was before the time he can identify them all.
ang last letter na natutunan ni pistoy is "U". at tuwang tuwa kami sa "W" nya... "ba-du"! heheheh!
also, pistoy can identify the numbers 1-9! there's a certain font type na mas madali nyang marecognize yung numbers. of course, 6 and 9 are hit-or-miss most of the time. hehehe! i guess nagbunga ang madalas naming magpunta sa walmart at target, kasi ang lalaki ng mga price tags dun. =P
yesterday pala, nagsusulat sila ni papa sa driveway with a chalk. papa drew "3" and asked pistoy kung ano yon. jecobie said "M!" tawa kami ni papa! so binuhat sya ni papa para nakaharap sa number, but pistoy corrected himself "W!" *lol*
recently he's obsessed with trains and trucks. anything na pwedeng i-line up at itulak sunod-sunod, train na. =P hubby je taught him that. and it's actually nice kasi he's using his imagination. kaya we're refraining from buying him a toy train. well, more like hubby je is refraining. ako medyo gusto ko para pag nasa labas kami, pwede nyang bitbitin yung totoong train. ngayon yung toy truck nya ang lagi nyang bitbit.
anyway, i'm thinking maybe we could do a train-themed 2nd bday party. at least yung design sa cake and yung happy bday banner, train ang design. i don't know if we'll have goody bags for the kids. kung sa pinas sana, go ako dyan dahil nandyan lang ang baclaran, quiapo at divisoria. pero dito kasi parang namamahalan ako. or siguro kasi we're not doing well financially kaya mas highlighted na ang bawat $1. hehe!

yesterday pala, nagsusulat sila ni papa sa driveway with a chalk. papa drew "3" and asked pistoy kung ano yon. jecobie said "M!" tawa kami ni papa! so binuhat sya ni papa para nakaharap sa number, but pistoy corrected himself "W!" *lol*
recently he's obsessed with trains and trucks. anything na pwedeng i-line up at itulak sunod-sunod, train na. =P hubby je taught him that. and it's actually nice kasi he's using his imagination. kaya we're refraining from buying him a toy train. well, more like hubby je is refraining. ako medyo gusto ko para pag nasa labas kami, pwede nyang bitbitin yung totoong train. ngayon yung toy truck nya ang lagi nyang bitbit.
anyway, i'm thinking maybe we could do a train-themed 2nd bday party. at least yung design sa cake and yung happy bday banner, train ang design. i don't know if we'll have goody bags for the kids. kung sa pinas sana, go ako dyan dahil nandyan lang ang baclaran, quiapo at divisoria. pero dito kasi parang namamahalan ako. or siguro kasi we're not doing well financially kaya mas highlighted na ang bawat $1. hehe!

updates, atbp.
colors
the best $1 investment = Crayola's Colors board book
3 weeks ago, we were at Target and we passed by the $1-item racks. i saw this board book about colors, and since it's just a dollar, i didn't have second thoughts throwing it into our cart.
pistoy's one and only colors board book only had blue, red, green, yellow and orange. and that book costs $10! anyway, this $1 book has all 8 basic colors, plus pink and white! nothing fancy, just 1 color per page.
why are board books so freakin' expensive! if they were able to publish a $1 board book, why can't the others do the same? why does education have to cost so much, from the 3-page baby books, to the board books, to costs of private schools and eventually college!
anyway, the $1 paid off! =P jecobie knows the 8 basic colors now! he surprised us all when he started "saying" the names last week. we were in chaos at home! =P
super bulol pa, but we were able to "decrypt" his code:
bra = brown
gi = green
bu = blue
insh = orange
purpo = purple
ba = black
o = yellow (je said it used to be something like "owo")
apa = red (don't ask me why. =P )
we were able to take a vid of jecobie reciting the colors when we show him the color markers (which we bought as a buy 1, get 1 deal). i uploaded it to my fb account. mama ayet has been bugging me to post pistoy vids, because papa norbie kept bragging to her about pistoy's latest "tricks". last time i talked to her, she said now she regrets not coming with papa. hehehe! =P
good job jecobie! we're so proud of you! *embrace-embrace!*
shapes
pistoy knows how to name some shapes now!
curco = circle
avo = oval
gago/gagon = pentagon
ish = star
ske = square
crocs = cross
art = heart
badede = triangle
he still gets a little confused with "rectangle" because it looks like a square. =P and we don't know what happened to his "triangle", he used to be able to say "taugu" which sound a little closer to triangle. hehe! now he says the same thing when he's refering to "butterfly", which is also "badede" in his vocab. *lol* i'm starting to think that any 3-syllable word to him is "badede". hahaha!
selective dyslexia
and we also think he is dyslexic with the letter "a". =P he calls "unan" as "anu", his "oval" as "avo". *lol* one time he kept saying "anu! anu!" and we can't understand him. then he picked up his pillow and said "anu!". i don't know how daddy je understood "anu" as "unan" right away. pareho ata silang mag-isip ni pistoy, laging sila ang nagkakaintindihan. patay tayo dyan!
run pistoy run!
pistoy also suddenly turned into this running machine! we used to be able to do grocery shopping with him just sitting on the cart. now he wants to go down, and run run run! he would run up and down the aisles. we always try to catch up with him, because he could get run over by other people's carts when they're not expecting a little kid to emerge out of an aisle at full speed. or maybe some people might be in a hurry, or not paying attention. needless to say, kami ang mas pagod pag sinasama namin si pistoy sa stores. on the flip side, alam namin na if we want to tire him out, just bring him to a store and he would run off his energy. hehe!
on a side note:
i think we know what jecobie will be sa halloween. we'll paint him blue. and he'll be MegaMind! *lol* je and i were watching that movie when it hit me, and i had a hard time completing my sentence because i can picture pistoy really pulling it off. hahaha! mean mom! =P

reminder to myself
i've had my share of growing up in a house where people scream at each other in the heat of arguments. when emotions run high, adults tend to forget that kids are not supposed to see those ugly stuff.
i am writing this post to remind myself, that i will strive to the best of my abilities to raise jecobie in a household free of those screaming bouts. i just don't want him to witness, and later remember things like that.

sweet child o' mine
i just have to blog about this, so i will have something to look back to when (or if) pistoy hits that stage when he's turned into a little monster. =P
pistoy goes to the office with daddy je, and gets the chance to play with the 2 other kids. je told me stories of how pistoy will share his toys with people. iaabot nya yung toys nya, as if to say "here, you can play with this!". i'm glad that he knows how to share.
i know the time will come na it will be "all-mine" stage. but for now, at least we know pistoy knows how to share.
at isa pa, hindi nang-aagaw ng toys si jecobie. if the kid is playing with a toy he wants, he will just look, and wait for his turn. he never grabs it away from the kid. he doesn't cry for it. he patiently waits. then pag binitawan na ng kalaro nya, he will pick it up and play with it.
i had the chance to witness this first hand yesterday when we were at the playground at the mall. there is this one raised/platformed area where there's a wall with puzzles. a little kid (we later found out he's thai, he's 14 months old, doesn't walk yet, and his name is "San" or something like that) was playing in that area. jecobie just stood by the platform, looking at the puzzle. once the kid got down, jecobie climbed up the platform and started playing with the puzzle. he looked back at us and smiled that happy smile. i feel a surge of pride that my kid is good-natured and kind. =) maybe people will mistake that for shyness, but for me, it's much more than that. (shempre proud mommy ako eh. hehe!)
when the kid came back and climbed up the platform to play with the puzzle again, jecobie moved on to another toy puzzle on the other side of the wall! he would look at the kid, as if waiting for him to finish playing, but he stayed on that other puzzle and played there. at this point, i can't be any more proud of him! =)
pistoy is also very affectionate. when he's happy about something, he gives you a kiss. when je and i are both present, when he kisses daddy, he would also kiss mommy, and vice versa. i remember, when mama and papa were here, pistoy would kiss one of us, and kiss everybody present. hindi yung 1 tao lang. at talagang tatawagin ka pa! hehe! *kisses daddy, then shouts "mama!", then kisses me too* so je and i try to be there for him when he calls out for us to give us a kiss. we drop whatever we're doing to walk over and claim our kiss. =) it just melts my heart.
at times it becomes sort of inconvenient, because he gives multiple kisses! *lol* so he would kiss daddy, call me, i drop my (for example) dishwashing duties to walk over and get my kiss. then i walk back to the sink. as soon as i got back, he's kissing daddy again, and calling me out again! *lol* we work around that one by carrying him over when one of us is busy. i tell you, it's the good kind of inconvenience. =P
i hope he stays the sweet little kid that he is. =)

1.5 years old. almost
almost 2 months! time flies! within the last 2 months, we were able to move to a new house, and mama&papa flew back to Pinas and we're on our own. it's been a very eventful 2 months, but i don't know what to write about. =)
quirks
everybody has one. and here are pistoy's:
1. goldfish - i bought him the rainbow colored, individually packed goldfish baked crackers. unfortunately, he only wants to eat the red and green pieces. he would fish for a piece, if it's a yellow or an orange, it goes back to the bag. *lol* the only time he eats those is when he's really, really hungry.
also with the goldfish, i noticed he's got a certain pattern how he eats it. he takes 2 bites off the tail first, then eats the rest in one bite. hehe! when he's really hungry, he just pops it into his mouth and holds out his hand for another one. at one point, he's got 5 crackers stuffed in his mouth at the same time, and he almost choked. =P
2. pag nasa sink kami ni je, washing dishes, or bottles, or even just our hands, jecobie will squeeze himself into the tiny space between our legs and the counter. he would keep doing it until you step away. =P
3. Pag nasa kotse na kami, pauwi ng bahay from je's office, he would do the "little einstein" pat-to-launch-the-rocketship thing. it replaced his "vrooom"ing sound effects pag umaandar ang kotse. you can tell he's outgrowing the baby einstein series kasi yung toddler version na yung nagho-hold ng attention nya eh. hehe!
4. sa bagong bahay, pag nasa carpet, normal lang sya maglakad. meaning, nakalapat ang talampakan sa sahig. then pag magco-cross na sya papunta sa tiles (sa ktichen, or hallway, or sa banyo), he would go on tip-toe! tapos after a few tip-toe steps, normal na ulet sya maglakad. hahaha! ang weird! =P it's like he's giving his feet time to adjust. =P
without mama and papa
it wasn't as bad as the last time. nung last time kasi, jecobie had a meltdown on the second day na wala sila mama't papa. good thing nasa NY pa sila non, so i was able to call them and jecobie listened to their voices on the phone.
this time, medyo nakakaintindi na ata si pistoy. sinamahan namin sila mama hanggang sa gate sa airport, and when we were walking away na, sinilip-silip nya sila mama't papa. i almost broke down, but i have to compose myself dahil baka umiyak si pistoy pag umiyak ako, eh sasakay pa kami ng tram pabalik sa airport waiting area.
anyway, on the second day, i took the day off, so kami lang sa bahay. medyo nagtataka na sya. lakad sya nang lakad around the house as if looking for "ayet" and "papa". but he didn't cry or call out for them. then one time, nasa van kami. he was just staring out of the window, at malungkot ang mata. i know pistoy misses them at that point, kasi yun yung first time na ako ang kasama nya sa second row seat, at hindi si mama or papa. *sigh*
it's hard seeing pistoy like that, so nag-webcam kami. pero ganon pa rin, ayaw nya pa rin yung webcam. he still wants to do the face-to-face thing.
sooooo.
papa is coming back next month to stay with us for at least another 4 months! =) i know we're being selfish, taking papa away from everybody else in pinas. but he immediately volunteered, after learning na 2 days lang tumagal yung bunsong kapatid ni je sa pagbe-baby sit. *lol* ayaw nya talagang maiwan si pistoy na walang nag-aalaga. super spoiled itong anak ko sa lolo't lola nya! =P
other updates
hmmm, ano pa bang updates. pistoy can say a few more words. he babbles A LOT, it's always amusing and funny. hehe!
he can request for specific things, like bubbles ("babus") when he wants to blow bubbles, raisins ("tas", for "pasas", hehe!), goldfish ("ish"), blueberries ("bu-bes"), orange juice ("oosh"), get down from the bed or chair ("ba" for "baba", + points finger to the floor, hehe!), and watch baby einstein dvds ("udo!" + holds out the dvd).
pistoy loves Eat Bulaga, especially the Little Miss Philippines segment. but only when the little girl is cute. hehe!
he loves the ABS-CBN Summer Station ID (featuring sarah, of course! popster ang anak ko! hahaha!) and will drop whatever he's doing to watch it on tv. hehe! i have a feeling na magugustuhan ni pistoy mag-fiesta sa pinas, kasi daming drums! =)
everytime he sees a candle, he makes the blowing sound. even if the candle is not lit. *lol*
when he gets a hold of our cellphone, he puts it near his ear and starts babbling. he would even pause between his sentences as if letting the other person respond first. *lol* then he would just walk around like that. =P
he's starting to learn shapes na rin ata. he can fit the pieces na sa shape sorter. he can identify the "pentagon" piece and call it out! ("gago" or "gagon" on good days, hehe!) aside from the pentagon, the star, and circle, everything else is a triangle ("taugu"), hahaha! there are times na hindi nya ma-figure out na he only needs to twist the pieces a little bit, tapos mafu-frustrate na sya. he would throw away the piece na ayaw magkasya. =P patay tayo dyan!
he can say a bunch of other things, but they only make sense to je and me, and only in context. hahaha! but i'm glad he's starting to try to communicate.
nauutusan ko na rin sya ng mga simple things, like magtapon sa basura, or iabot ang remote control, or kunin yung shoes nya, or kunin ang toys.
i really wish maturuan na namin syang magligpit ng toys nya. he would follow instructions, but easily loses interest. sometimes, ikakalat nya ulet yung nailigpit na nya. =P
hay anak, sana sa akin ka na lang nagmana na mahilig magligpit at galit sa kalat. =P

updates @ 15-month-mark
i can't believe it's been over a month since i last posted an update on pistoy! it seems like a lot has happened already, and now i don't know where to begin. =P
samuel bilibid
i think it was around pistoy's 15th month when he started really walking without holding on to anything. on the days leading to that milestone, he pushes around a walker thingy, and he was going really fast i was worried his steps won't catch up and he'll fall on his face. =P but he started to control it, and when he can maneuver it, that's when he started just taking steps without holding on to anything. mama and papa were getting impatient that he's not walking on his own yet... and now, a few weeks later, they can't stop pistoy from walking around endlessly. we started calling him "samuel", for "samuel bilibid". the guy who spat on Jesus' face when He was carrying the cross. Supposedly, Jesus cursed him that he is to wander around aimlessly for the rest of his life. so there. pistoy is like that, wandering around aimlessly, endlessly. he can make a dozen laps around the house in 30 minutes.
mama and papa had to teach him how to hold on to the walls when he's stepping down. meron kasing low step sa sala at sa kitchen, and he has no problems stepping up. yung pababa ang mahirap. he learned that fast, pinakita lang ni mama once, and he's doing it! =)
farm animals
pistoy also started imitating animal sounds na tinuturo sa kanya. he knows sheep (ba!), cow (mmmm!), dog (aw, aw! - askal version), cat (maw, maw!), duck (kak, kak!). he tries (bless hi heart) the horse's neighing sound, and the rooster's crowing. but it just sounded like he's choking. hehe!
bookworm
pistoy also likes books at this point. we cleared out a part of the tv stand where we used to put the dvds, and he uses that as his bookcase. hehe! he would "read" all his books every day. at times, he would just flip the pages on his own, sometimes he would hand the book to someone to read it to him. his favorites are the Colors, the rattle book, little lamb, little lady bug, pat the bunny, the belly button book (i forgot the title), and good night moon. one time, we were at marshalls, i handed him a Baby Einstein board book set. he stared at it, and then hummed the last part of the Baby Einstein video intro! (hm-hm!) it's hard to explain without the actual video or sound byte. maybe one of these days i can dub it. hehe!
before going to bed, pistoy and daddy je reads the pat the bunny, the belly button book, and good night moon.we're still not giving him the regular books, napupunit pa rin nya eh. but he's good with the board books, hindi na nya kinakagat. =B
experiences
at this point, i think pistoy's mind is like a sponge. i'd like to give him as much experience as he can possibly have. we went to the beach (have to go back there, para di na sya matakot sa tubig), went to the strawberry festival (which is like a perya), went strawberry picking (he enjoyed squishing the strawberries!), we take him to the park a lot, to the grocery and other stores.
we plan on bringing him to the aquarium, to the zoo, to a petting zoo, and at least go back to the beach. i wanted to take him to Key West, but mama said he's too young to travel that far, so we're postponing that for when my parents and my brother are here together. sort of like a family field trip. hehe!
i want to buy him more books, more move-your-butt-and-be-active type of toys. he's got his basketball court, but he plays only for a few minutes then quits. =P maybe when he gets a little older, he'll be more interested. we still haven't opened his baseball set.
i want to buy him an easel... he's starting to get interested in crayons, when he's not trying to eat it. =P i want to let him try the finger painting thing (we have the non-toxic ones at home), but i'm afraid he'd still try to eat it, thinking it's puree food. hehe!

speaking of food, i wish pistoy would eat more rice and veggies, and drink more water. he's big on snacks, but you have to really "work" to get him to eat rice. fruits, no problem at all, mahilig sya sa prutas. veggies, only when pureed or chopped really fine. we haven't given him meat yet. only very little strands of it, like pag sa sarsa or sabaw. i better give him more fish too.
eggs, we have to revisit giving him just the yolk. parang may konting allergic reaction sya sa itlog eh. we gave him some eggs and rice from the katsudon dish, and he threw up after a few minutes. tapos namula yung baba at pisngi nya where the eggs got contact. *sigh* parang andaming bawal sa anak ko ah. we also confirmed that he really has some allergy sa milk protein. nung binigyan namin sya ng regular milk, namula din skin nya where the milk got contact, at nag-throw up din sya. so ngayon, nasa Enfagrow Soy Toddler kami na formula.
as for water, he would take sips, pero hindi sya humihingi. i told mama and papa to try to give him water every hour, para masanay syang umiinom kahit hindi naman kumakain. one time tuloy constipated sya for a week halos! nagmo-move naman sya everyday, pero parang kambing, bilog-bilog na matigas. he loooves prunes, so thank God, may panlaban naman kami don kung sakaling ma-constipate ulet.
hmmm, ano pa bang update sayo pistoy? hehe! we're seriously considering getting him a prepaid college fund. i'm still researching on the pros and cons, and we still have to sort our budget if we can afford it. lately magastos kami eh. everytime na umuuwi kaming pinas, napapalaki ang expenses namin. hehe! aside from the usual expenses, we're anticipating na tataas ang mortgage namin pag lumipat kami ng bahay. we are actively looking for a house, para naman mas ok na neighborhood ang kalakihan ni pistoy. school zoning.... that's a different issue, and a completely different blog entry. =P
God help us! =)
samuel bilibid
i think it was around pistoy's 15th month when he started really walking without holding on to anything. on the days leading to that milestone, he pushes around a walker thingy, and he was going really fast i was worried his steps won't catch up and he'll fall on his face.
=P i want to let him try the finger painting thing (we have the non-toxic ones at home), but i'm afraid he'd still try to eat it, thinking it's puree food. hehe!

little steps
jecobie is slowly building up his confidence to walk on his own! =)
last feb 6, two days after his ER trip... hubby je and i were sitting on the floor across each other. pinapalakad namin si pistoy patawid sa isa'isa. jecobie finally let go of daddy's hands and walked a few wobbly steps towards me! i wish there's a way to extract that mental picture from my memory... jecobie was just ecstatic with his own achievement! =) he was all smiles while walking, and when he finally "tagged" my shoulders, he launched himself into an embrace, and burst into a full open-mouth, wrinkled-nose smile.
we were all clapping and laughing and smiling and saying "good job", and i think he probably took that cue because he obliged to walk back to daddy je afterwards. good job baby!
everyday, we try to widen that gap between the "tag posts".
sometimes, jecobie lets go and stands on his own, like when he's busy with something. nawawala sa loob nyang di sya nakahawak. kelan kaya mawawala sa loob nyang di sya nakahawak *while* walking? hehehe! excited na ko makita si pistoy lumakad, pero at the same time, parang ayoko pa! my baby! growing up sooo fast!
other developments:
- he's already "feeding" himself with a spoon. since nagpa-praktis pa sya, we give him oatmeal on his own bowl, tapos we spoon-feed him with his real meal. eventually we'll have to really let him do it. sa ngayon nga lang, since nagsasanay pa syang humawak ng spoon nya at isubo yon, it's easier to clean up oatmeal than, let's say, beef + veggies.
- he knows where his "tenga", "bibig" and "dila" are. he points to them pag tinatanong namin, "nasan ang <body part here>?". he's still confused with "mata" and "ilong", although, pag sa doggy stuffed toy nya, naituturo nya yung mata at ilong correctly. =)
- mahilig si pistoy sa maasim! hindi sya mahilig sa kanin, niluluwa nya. pero pag sinigang or sinampalukan ang ulam, kinakain nya!
- his latest fave toy is his boom box with mic given by hubby je's tita. we were surprised how he found out how to work the mic kahit once lang nya kami nakita gumamit non. he knows which buttons to press to play the songs too. tapos itatapat na nya yung mic sa bibig nya, and "talk". one time, tinapat nya yung mic sa isang toy nya na may music din. nag-amplifier pa ang mokong. hehe!
- he now knows how to turn off lights. thanks to the house-thingy toy given by kuya eidan, he would switch off the lights, pero di pa nya nage-gets kung papano i-switch on ulet. =P one time, doorbell naman sya nang doorbell dun sa toy. nakakaloka! pero i guess he's really building those connections sa brain nya na when you press a button, something happens. hehe!
- pistoy is starting to learn how to drink from a sippy cup. we bought this tippy cup (or whatever it's called), which is specially designed para konting tip lang ng cup, makakainom na yung bata. he used to just open his mouth and let the fluid "drip" inside his mouth. but yesterday, i saw him actively sipping from the spout. yun nga lang, nasamid. =( i hope di naman sya ma-trauma.
- pistoy is starting to play pretend. this morning, before i left for work, jecobie was holding on his toy hammer. nandun din yung plastic bowl nya na pinaglalagyan ng cheerios (oh yeah, he likes cheerios! buti na lang, fiber din yon eh.). he started "dipping" the hammer sa bowl, then brings it to his mouth acting like kakagat and said "haammm!". hehehe! naglulutu-lutuan si pistoy? =P then he dips the hammer again sa bowl, and reaches out to me to "feed" me too. "hammmm!" hehehe! nakakatuwa! =)
- nauutusan ko na rin si pistoy recently. instead of reaching for his toys myself, tinuturo ko sa kanya yung ipapakuha ko, then tell him "give kay mommy". tapos kukunin naman nya at iaabot sa akin. =) one time pinaabot ko yung shorts nya, binigay naman! =) may katulong na ko sa pagliligpit! hehehhe!
- he's trying to mimick some of the words sa bedtime book nya (good night moon). he would mimick "good night" (gu-na), "clocks" (aks), "socks" (aks), and "the end" (de-e). =P
ano pa ba, yun lang ang naiisip kong developments nya lately eh. hubby je requested that i blog about these, para may "journal" kami. pistoy's personality is really showing na ngayon. malambing sya sa amin nila je, mama at papa. kiss nang kiss kahit di mo hingan ng kiss. hehe! pag may ginawa syang something new, he would look at us as if asking kung ok lang ba yung ginawa nya.
at fave nyang tawagin si mama ngayon. "ayt!".
pag nagpapakarga kay mama, he would shout: "mama, ayt!" ("sama, ayet!") hehehe!
btw, a few days ago, he started smiling at the little girls sa park. susme, mukhang chickboy nga ata itong anak ko. deadma sa little boys, mega-smile sa little girls. =P

pistoy's 1st ER trip
i realized i shouldn't have posted on FB about the ER trip, kasi andaming nag-aalala. andami rin napapost asking how he is. thanks for the concern friends. he's doing better now, i think. didn't mean to make anybody worry. =)
how it started
last week, may parang pimple sa right butt cheek si pistoy. we thought it was no big deal, dahil nagkaron na rin sya ng ganon dati, pumutok lang mag-isa. but after a few days, medyo namumula yung area.
by friday, mama said super-iyak si pistoy nung inupo nila sa carseat papuntang park. tapos ayaw sumakay sa swing, eh fave nya don eh. yun pala, biglaang namaga yung butt nya. namumula at medyo matigas yung area. pag naglalaro sa lapag si pistoy, he sits funny. tinatagilid nya yung upo nya para di nya maupuan yung bukol. that night, iyak nang iyak si pistoy at may fever na, so we gave him some baby tylenol for the pain.
saturday morning (8:30am), we went to his pedia. buti na lang maaga kami pumunta kasi just overnight, namaga yung butt nya, parang pigsa na ang itsura. =( it was red, swollen, very hard, at lumaki yung inflamed area. as soon as nakita ng pedia niya, binigyan kami ng note and pinapunta na kami sa ER ng All Children's Hospital sa downtown. wala daw kasing surgery area dun sa clinic, kaya mas ok na sa hospital talaga gawin. punta kami don, kami rin ang una.
the ER experience
pistoy was generally ok when we reached the ER (9am-ish), so hintay lang kami a bit after i filled up a short form. kami lang ni je ang pumasok sa ER, si mama't papa naghintay lang sa lobby ng hospital.
then they did some standard tests. weight, temperature, blood pressure. pistoy was very curious pa nga, patingin-tingin lang habang kinukuha yung stats nya. then they led us to an examination room. hindi na pinahubad yung top ni pistoy, pina-alis na lang yung diaper. tapos naka-hospital gown sya. i must admit, i was tempted to take pics kasi pistoy looked so cute in his Bugs Bunny hospital gown. =)
a couple of nurses looked at him first, and interviewed us about his health history, allergies, family records, etc. jecobie was crying na kasi antok na sya, at siguro the baby tylenol was wearing off na rin. after a few minutes, dumating na yung doc. kamukha sya ni john travolta. hehe!
the pedia wanted to make sure kung anong meron sa bukol, pwedeng pus daw yon, or inflamed tissue. so pina-ultrasound pa si pistoy. eh pag natatamaan yung bukol nya, super sakit. kaya talagang iyak si pistoy. tipong nanginginig buong katawan nya sa iyak. =( talagang umagos ang luha ng little boy ko, nakakaawa. =( daddy je was carrying him when they did the ultrasound, and pistoy's fingernails were digging in sa pagkakahawak nya, sa sobrang sakit siguro. as soon as the technician saw the "sac", she said something like "oh my God, that's a big one." nakita din namin, malaki nga yung area. naawa ata yung technician kay pistoy, hinatid pa kami pabalik sa examination room from the ultrasound room.
we waited a little more, medyo nakakatulog na si pistoy. karga pa rin sya ni je (poor daddy, nag-alaxan that night dahil sa sakit ng likod sa pagbubuhat). finally the doc said pistoy probably has MRSA, and the skin infection needs to undergo a minor "surgery" to drain the pus and liquid na nag-accumulate. he recommended to sedate pistoy para daw di ma-trauma sa pain, at para mas mabilis ang procedure. at sa dami rin ng pus, mas ok daw na hiwain na para makuha lahat. the doc was reassuring us na pistoy will only be sedated if we give our consent, and that may ibang specialists who will look after his stats (like breathing), to make sure he's not having any reaction to the sedative. we made the decision to go on with it. that was 10am.
since pistoy had some milk earlier, the doc recommended we wait for an hour before they sedate him. at this point, umuwi muna kami ni mama to take care of stuff. i didn't even have my wallet with me. papa stayed sa hospital lobby in case may kailangan si je. mama and i went home, took a bath, grabbed breakfast for ourselves, je and papa.
side note: we were having pistoy and my birthday lunch that noon, and it was too late to cancel. we had the place reserved, and people will be coming at 11:30am, some may even be on their way. so before i headed back to the hospital, i dropped mama sa resto (sa kanto lang namin) to take care of stuff (food, guests). we decided to go on with the luncheon, with or without pistoy and me.
i wasn't there when they sedated pistoy at 11am. hubby je said within 2 minutes na tinurukan si jecobie, naging groggy na sya. then the staff prepared for the procedure. they did it sa examination room, may built-in facilities na rin sila for minor ops. pinalabas si je ng doc when they did the procedure. sabi ni je, in about 10 minutes, tapos na.
the swollen area measured 4cm x 6cm, and the pus area inside measured 2cm x 3cm. they made a 1cm cut dun sa bukol. they took some samples to culture it, to make sure that the infection is not resistant to the antibiotics they will prescribe. then they drained the rest, tapos pinasukan ng "packing" yung area, parang gauze na may gamot. para daw sipsipin yung pus kung may natira, at kung may mapupunta pa dun sa area.
when i got back to the room (11:20am-ish), they were cleaning up the bed and pistoy is still lying on his stomach, groggy, and crying feebly. i stroked his arms and legs, and talked to him that it was ok. he settled down a bit. he must be looking for more familiar voices, since he can't focus well. daddy je carried him, and he just laid his head on daddy's shoulder and slept. it was a good 30 minutes ata before medyo nahihimasmasan si pistoy. he tried to wake up, and ended up smacking his head on je's chest at one time dahil sa sobrang kalasingan pa. the nurse saw it and natawa ng konti. kami rin ni je natawa eh, kasi parang lasing humandusay si pistoy.
pistoy slept well. both je and i agreed that the worst is over.at this point, pinasunod ko na si papa sa room. si mama naman, tawag nang tawag kay papa, tinatanong si pistoy, at the same time giving updates na dumarating na yung mga tao sa resto, and that she's updating them of what happened.
after an hour, the doc checked on pistoy, and asked us to feed him some liquid. if he throws up, he needs to stay and recover. if he doesn't, we could go home. we gave pistoy his milk, and he happily took it. no throwing up after 1 ounce. he was still a bit groggy, he sways on the spot, but he's his usual self other than that. he was drinking his milk, eating his banana puffs. crawling on the bed. he was also calling out "ayt" (lola-mama ayet), naghahanap talaga ng familiar faces and voices. palipat-lipat nga sya ng karga sa aming 3 nila je at papa eh. as soon as he started cruising on the bed rail, and started bouncing to "dance to the beat", i know he's ready to go. that was almost 2pm.
post ER
the nurse took care of the paper work. we will be charged later after the insurance kicks in. our bill will come through the mail. in 10 minutes after the nurse discharged us, we were pulling out of the parking lot.
we headed straight to the resto for our birthday lunch. we were 2 hours late on our own party! =P jecobie was sleepy, it was his nap time na rin kasi, so je carried him lang. when we got there, all the guests have already eaten. after saying hello to everyone, nag-blow na ng cake, then nag-dessert na. di na kami nakakain ni je, nakihalubilo na lang kami sa guests, lahat din kasi nagtatanong kung anong nangyari at kung kamusta na si pistoy. after about an hour, nagsimula na mag-paalam ang mga tao. it all worked out well, kasi pistoy needs to rest din. dumaan lang din talaga kami para makita man lang nila si pistoy. and bukod sa local area na hiniwa sa kanya, he's fine naman. no fever, no pains (yet then, baka may effect pa yung binigay sa kanya sa hospital).
post ER care
so ngayon, may incision si pistoy sa butt, at may nakapasok na gauze. may konting part na nakalabas. bukas (tuesday), we're going back to the pedia for a follow-up. either papalitan yung gauze (juskolord, sana wala nang namuo ulet!), or tatanggalin na totally and let the incision heal.
as of yesterday, naka-upo na sya sa swing sa park, pero medyo nakatagilid. si pistoy na mismo nagtatagilid ng upo nya, para di nya maupuan yung incision. may dressing naman, pero masakit pa rin yon shempre.
but he's doing ok overall, other than pag pinapalitan namin yung dressing or nauupuan nya bigla. he's eating well, playing well. he laughs and still "performs" his tricks. he slept through the night last night, and wala namang fever.
it was heartbreaking to see your kid in state of pain. i know it was inevitable. it was hard for me to leave the room before jecobie was sedated, i wanted to be there for him. but i also know some part of me doesn't want to see him like that. in the end, we were still thankful that the pain was "localized" to that swollen part of his butt. can you imagine how much harder it would be if your kid is experiencing that kind of pain all over his body? if jecobie still had fever before the procedure, there's no way i am leaving his side.
parenthood is not for the faint of heart. we've been baptized by the ER fire.

we waited a little more, medyo nakakatulog na si pistoy. karga pa rin sya ni je (poor daddy, nag-alaxan that night dahil sa sakit ng likod sa pagbubuhat). finally the doc said pistoy probably has MRSA, and the skin infection needs to undergo a minor "surgery" to drain the pus and liquid na nag-accumulate. he recommended to sedate pistoy para daw di ma-trauma sa pain, at para mas mabilis ang procedure. at sa dami rin ng pus, mas ok daw na hiwain na para makuha lahat. the doc was reassuring us na pistoy will only be sedated if we give our consent, and that may ibang specialists who will look after his stats (like breathing), to make sure he's not having any reaction to the sedative. we made the decision to go on with it. that was 10am.
since pistoy had some milk earlier, the doc recommended we wait for an hour before they sedate him. at this point, umuwi muna kami ni mama to take care of stuff. i didn't even have my wallet with me. papa stayed sa hospital lobby in case may kailangan si je. mama and i went home, took a bath, grabbed breakfast for ourselves, je and papa.
side note: we were having pistoy and my birthday lunch that noon, and it was too late to cancel. we had the place reserved, and people will be coming at 11:30am, some may even be on their way. so before i headed back to the hospital, i dropped mama sa resto (sa kanto lang namin) to take care of stuff (food, guests). we decided to go on with the luncheon, with or without pistoy and me.
i wasn't there when they sedated pistoy at 11am. hubby je said within 2 minutes na tinurukan si jecobie, naging groggy na sya. then the staff prepared for the procedure. they did it sa examination room, may built-in facilities na rin sila for minor ops. pinalabas si je ng doc when they did the procedure. sabi ni je, in about 10 minutes, tapos na.
the swollen area measured 4cm x 6cm, and the pus area inside measured 2cm x 3cm. they made a 1cm cut dun sa bukol. they took some samples to culture it, to make sure that the infection is not resistant to the antibiotics they will prescribe. then they drained the rest, tapos pinasukan ng "packing" yung area, parang gauze na may gamot. para daw sipsipin yung pus kung may natira, at kung may mapupunta pa dun sa area.
when i got back to the room (11:20am-ish), they were cleaning up the bed and pistoy is still lying on his stomach, groggy, and crying feebly. i stroked his arms and legs, and talked to him that it was ok. he settled down a bit. he must be looking for more familiar voices, since he can't focus well. daddy je carried him, and he just laid his head on daddy's shoulder and slept. it was a good 30 minutes ata before medyo nahihimasmasan si pistoy. he tried to wake up, and ended up smacking his head on je's chest at one time dahil sa sobrang kalasingan pa. the nurse saw it and natawa ng konti. kami rin ni je natawa eh, kasi parang lasing humandusay si pistoy.
pistoy slept well. both je and i agreed that the worst is over.at this point, pinasunod ko na si papa sa room. si mama naman, tawag nang tawag kay papa, tinatanong si pistoy, at the same time giving updates na dumarating na yung mga tao sa resto, and that she's updating them of what happened.
after an hour, the doc checked on pistoy, and asked us to feed him some liquid. if he throws up, he needs to stay and recover. if he doesn't, we could go home. we gave pistoy his milk, and he happily took it. no throwing up after 1 ounce. he was still a bit groggy, he sways on the spot, but he's his usual self other than that. he was drinking his milk, eating his banana puffs. crawling on the bed. he was also calling out "ayt" (lola-mama ayet), naghahanap talaga ng familiar faces and voices. palipat-lipat nga sya ng karga sa aming 3 nila je at papa eh. as soon as he started cruising on the bed rail, and started bouncing to "dance to the beat", i know he's ready to go. that was almost 2pm.
post ER
the nurse took care of the paper work. we will be charged later after the insurance kicks in. our bill will come through the mail. in 10 minutes after the nurse discharged us, we were pulling out of the parking lot.
we headed straight to the resto for our birthday lunch. we were 2 hours late on our own party! =P jecobie was sleepy, it was his nap time na rin kasi, so je carried him lang. when we got there, all the guests have already eaten. after saying hello to everyone, nag-blow na ng cake, then nag-dessert na. di na kami nakakain ni je, nakihalubilo na lang kami sa guests, lahat din kasi nagtatanong kung anong nangyari at kung kamusta na si pistoy. after about an hour, nagsimula na mag-paalam ang mga tao. it all worked out well, kasi pistoy needs to rest din. dumaan lang din talaga kami para makita man lang nila si pistoy. and bukod sa local area na hiniwa sa kanya, he's fine naman. no fever, no pains (yet then, baka may effect pa yung binigay sa kanya sa hospital).
post ER care
so ngayon, may incision si pistoy sa butt, at may nakapasok na gauze. may konting part na nakalabas. bukas (tuesday), we're going back to the pedia for a follow-up. either papalitan yung gauze (juskolord, sana wala nang namuo ulet!), or tatanggalin na totally and let the incision heal.
as of yesterday, naka-upo na sya sa swing sa park, pero medyo nakatagilid. si pistoy na mismo nagtatagilid ng upo nya, para di nya maupuan yung incision. may dressing naman, pero masakit pa rin yon shempre.
but he's doing ok overall, other than pag pinapalitan namin yung dressing or nauupuan nya bigla. he's eating well, playing well. he laughs and still "performs" his tricks. he slept through the night last night, and wala namang fever.
it was heartbreaking to see your kid in state of pain. i know it was inevitable. it was hard for me to leave the room before jecobie was sedated, i wanted to be there for him. but i also know some part of me doesn't want to see him like that. in the end, we were still thankful that the pain was "localized" to that swollen part of his butt. can you imagine how much harder it would be if your kid is experiencing that kind of pain all over his body? if jecobie still had fever before the procedure, there's no way i am leaving his side.
parenthood is not for the faint of heart. we've been baptized by the ER fire.

pistoy tricks
letting go
sa pinas unang tumayo si pistoy nang walang hawak. he would just stand there, balancing himself, then papalakpak at sasayaw ng konti. then uupo na. hehehe! it was such a milestone for us, kasi parang nawala yung takot ni pistoy eh. unfortunately, pagbalik dito sa US, parang takot ulet sya bumitaw. so i took out the toys he's playing with sa pinas, para bumalik yung association na it's ok to let go. surprisingly, and i don't know if it's just coincidence, pero recently tumatayo na ulet sya nang walang hawak. hehe! papa said he took 2 steps while "brushing" his hands on papa's arm. ayaw pa rin nang walang hawak, pero sabi ni papa, light na lang yung hawak sa kanya ni pistoy. parang reassurance lang siguro.
kakak
pistoy keeps chanting "kakak" a few days ago. one of my cousins, si dardrein, was nicknamed "kakak" for the exact same reason, she kept saying that when she was little. =P so i guess that makes pistoy "kakak jr."
pistoy picks up cues pretty fast. one time, mama taught him how to hold a projector pen toy, and now, he knows how to hold it correctly! he would even request na patayin nila mama yung ilaw sa kwarto nila pag nilalaro nya yun. hehe! pag naririnig nya yung word na "tenga", he holds his ears. pag naririnig nya yung "boy", he would do the "good boy" pose. pag humawak sya ng phone, he would hold it against his ears and "talk", as if trying to call someone. and, whenever he gets hold of ANY remote control, he points it to the tv, nakataas pa ang arms. hehehe!
hay pistoy. pwede bang wag ka munang lumaki! can i keep you little? =)

pistoy in pinas
one of the MANY things we learned in this trip, is that jetlag is harder with a little one in tow. =P
hubby je and i tried to adjust to the pinas timezone as fast as we can, but it didn't really work. why? dahil pistoy is taking his own sweet time. =P i totally did not anticipate this little inconvenience. =P
tinatry naming gumising sa umaga at matulog sa gabi. pero si pistoy, tulog sa umaga, gising sa gabi. so what happens is gising kami ni je sa umaga, at gising din sa gabi! so i think, if you have the luxury of time, let jetlag run its own course. take a nap (don't sleep in like the little one does) when he's sleeping his "night sleep" sa umaga/hapon, just so you'll have some energy to stay awake at dawn when he's also awake.
another lesson, which might be applicable to pistoy lang, i dunno... is to let him sleep when he needs to, and don't wake him up if he doesn't have to. what this translates to is that gimiks become a little challenging to schedule. i'm lucky that most of my friends are also mothers/fathers now, so they know how it is. they were pretty flexible with time, and they understand if we have to call "pack up" once pistoy starts getting cranky because he's sleepy. also, if there's an event that coincides with his nap/bed time, an event that can't be rescheduled, we leave him with family at home. it seldom happened, as we try to work around the schedule, but we did this nung binyag ng anak ni jotster (a high school friend). dinala namin si pistoy sa church so our friends could meet him, but he went home with papa after the ceremonies. kami na lang ni hubby je ang tumuloy sa reception. it worked out well. pistoy was able to rest well (he was still sick that time), and we had time to really catch up with friends dahil we had time for ourselves. of course we missed him big time, lalo na when our friends rommel/tenten was attending to their son jecjec. we suddenly wished pistoy was there too. but in the end, it was a wise decision.
probably due to the extremely different weather, or maybe kasama na rin yung pollution factor, expect the little one to be sick. pistoy, who seldom gets sick, was sick the entire first 2 weeks of our stay there. sipon then naging ubo. sobrang handy ng snot sucker namin (babycomfynose). we never leave home without it. a lot of our friends and family also loved it, and requested for one. hehe! pagbalik ko tuloy dito sa US, i have to buy 8 of them! =P
another thing we learned is... no matter how careful we are with regards to sanitizing pistoy's stuff, he will eventually put something dirty in his mouth. hahaha! i think i've become a germophobe when i moved to the US. things that don't usually gross me out when i was living in pinas, now grosses me out! =P ang arte. hehe! the trip to pinas certainly reminded me of my roots, and to be at peace with germs. hehehe!
we borrowed my niece's stroller na parang stroller-convertible-to-bike thingy, and pistoy keeps reaching for the wheels! eh ginagamit yon sa kalsada, and shempre sa pinas, the streets are not really the cleanest. =P hubby je freaks out, and i freak out, and we bring out the sanitizing wipes or wash his hands with soap and water. but our relatives will just dust off pistoy's hands and that's it! =P but he lives still. then one time, my niece yana handed him a ball, and pistoy happily obliged to smack it to his mouth. in a few seconds, he managed to cover the entire ball with his saliva. =P then i later saw yana playing with the same set of balls on the street, and it rolled into the sidewalk canal with stagnant water. my cousin took the ball, ran it quickly through the faucet, and gave it back to my niece. and yet, pistoy and yana lives! in my "safeguard commercial" eyes, there are germs all over the wheels and the ball. but pistoy lived.
in fairness to my relatives, they treat pistoy with extra care when it comes to stuff. they are very protective of what pistoy eats. they choose the taho vendors ("wag ka dyan bumili, kay tatang na lang, mas malinis"), the lugaw vendors ("kay pareng toi ka bumili, sabihin mo para sa apo ni norbie"), etc. also, they stopped bringing in their slippers inside the house ("gumagapang dyan si pistoy, hubarin nyo tsinelas nyo! bawal sapatos!"), and our househelp cleans the floor twice a day instead of just once. =P
hmmm, ano pa ba. pistoy had a great time playing with my cousins and niece and nephew. pistoy is usually suplado with people he doesn't know, pero pagdating sa pinas, lahat sinasamahan! =) i think that almost 1 month in pinas did wonders to his social skills. "kinakausap" nya si jhairee (anak ni alpair), at nakikipaglaro sya with yana (anak ni dorein). fave nyang i-kiss si eibron, jaymie at dorein. at ang daldal nya ngayon! kung ano-anong syllables ang sinasabi nya. sa pinas, he usually chants "yana" and "chukoy". i think nakilala nya si yana kasi laging tinatawag si yana ng mga tao (sa sobrang kakulitan!), and "chukoy" is probably "it's ok". hehehe!
we tried to document a lot of things for pistoy's firsts, but a lot of firsts also came undocumented, like his first plane ride (it was pretty tough the first time, flying from FL to NY on an 8pm flight, his bed time), his first tricycle ride, first serving of taho, etc. but i don't regret not being able to capture them. just seeing pistoy enjoying is enough. after all, this won't be his last time to visit the native land. it would be nice to bring him back some time when he's a bit more aware of what's happening. then maybe he'd enjoy dirty ice cream more. =)

pistoy's first plane trip
going into this trip, i was worried about the ear aches pag nagka-change ng air pressure sa cabin during take-off and landing. but it turns out, that was (sort of) the easiest to remedy pala. just make sure the child is eating or drinking para lunok nang lunok, and this will relieve the pressure.
Tampa to NY
ok yung take-off. pistoy was pretty hungry by then kaya kumain sya ng BreadSticks and had a bottle ng dede. since lunok sya nang lunok, hindi sya na-bother sa change ng air pressure sa tenga.
kaya lang, kain pa rin sya nang kain throughout the flight! the flight was just 2 hours. kaya nung pa-landing na, ayaw na kumain or dumede kasi busog na. kaya sumakit tenga nya, at ayon, super iyak. =( he was pulling on his ears kaya alam namin na yun ang nagba-bother sa kanya. eventually, napainom namin sya ng konting dede, kaya siguro nabawasan yung pressure sa tenga.
Lesson # 1
budget the feeding when you are expecting just a short flight. binigay namin yung dede ni pistoy a few moments after take-off (as in yung air-borne na yung plane). we should have stopped giving him snacks, and resort to distracting him with toys, para medyo gutom pa sya by landing. oh well, we learned.
NY to HongKong (the loooong flight)
ok ulet sa take-off. since mahaba pa yung flight, hinayaan lang namin syang mag-snack at dumede as much as he wants.
nung gising sya, he was kind of restless sa seat. siguro kasi nasa regular seat lang kami (we didn't get the bassinet seats sa dami ng babies sa flight, and they booked in advance).
he wants to roam around, kaya inaakay namin sya sa paglalakad. fave tambayan namin yung malapit sa food station/gallery, at malapit sa restrooms. it helps that we were wearing tshirt, comfy jeans, and comfy shoes, kasi we did a lot of bending and walking with pistoy.
ok din si pistoy sa landing. around 3 hours before landing, medyo budgeted na yung pagkain nya. ok lang naman sya.
Lesson # 2
bring change of clothes sa plane. i brought 2 tshirts, 1 pants, pati bra. may dala rin akong pang-ponytail, face towel, perfume, and lots and lots of baby wipes. pag kumakain kasi si pistoy, medyo messy, so baby wipes ang katapat nya. kids will be messy, and that's fine. punasan at palitan na lang ng damit pag malapit nang mag-landing. =P
Lesson # 3
most likely you'll have a big diaper bag to hold EVERYTHING your baby will need. but make sure it will fit under the seat in front of you. if it won't, bring a smaller bag with the basic needs. based on experience namin, that bag should have:
- pamalit na damit (1 short sleeves, 1 long sleeves, 1 pants)
- face towel or burp cloth
- blanket (if your baby hates wearing socks, like our pistoy)
- diapers
- wipes
- disposable changing pad (if you're oc-oc like us, hehe!)
- poopie bag (if your baby's poop stinks like our pistoy's, haha!)
- 1-2 small toys
- 1-2 small books
- 2-3 bottles of dede
- 1-2 types of meals and snacks (it helps to put it in ziploc bags para hindi bulky yung containers)
- any medicines (if needed)
meron pa rin kaming bigger diaper bag with more stuff, but it was too big to fit sa ilalim ng seat, kaya we had to stow it sa overhead compartment. it's kind of a hassle na tatayo everytime may kailangan, kaya we transfered those basic stuff sa smaller bag and yun ang nasa ibaba lang.
Lesson # 4
if you plan on giving your baby some medicine to help them calm down or sleep, make sure you test them days before the flight.
technically, hindi papayag ang pedia na bigyan ng something ang baby kung wala naman talagang sakit, but only to calm them down. like benadryl. but for those whose pedia will allow it, do a test run days in advance, to make sure na walang allergy to that medicine yung baby. and also to make sure you know the effects of the medication. sa ibang bata daw kasi, nagiging hyper sa benadryl, instead na makatulog. =P
we didn't give anything to pistoy, first dahil most of my relatives in NY advised against it. and secondly dahil we didn't get to test it days prior to the flight. mahirap na kung may allergic reaction si pistoy, saan naman kami hahanap ng doctor sa eroplano. =P
HongKong to Manila
take off is fine again. we budgeted his snacks, as we learned in our Tampa-NY flight. hehe! 1.5 hrs lang kasi yung trip this time.
=P sabi nung flight attendant umupo daw, kasi gagayahin daw ng iba, tatayo na to get their luggages, kaya sabi ni je "i'm not getting my luggages. if anybody stands up, i will make sure they will sit down again."
ayaw pumayag nung babae kaya sabi ni je something like "he threw up 3 times already. if i hurt myself, i won't sue you, i know you're just doing your job. i just don't want him to throw up again."
so finally, pinabayaan na sya nung babae, sabi lang "just be careful". eh si je civil naman, sabi nya "i will, thank you." tapos tumayo na sya karga si pistoy. hehe!
sobrang kaawa kasi si pistoy nung umiiyak na sa antok. lahat tinry na namin, talagang naiinis na sya. within 5 minutes paglabas ng plane, tulog na. kids can't help it. kung hindi sanay ang baby na matulog nang karga, it will really be a challenge sa parents.
Manila to HongKong, Hongkong to NY, NY to Tampa
everything's a breeze! i feel like we're veterans in flying. the main difference, we got the bassinet seat this time. pistoy was less restless dahil pag nabugnot sya, tatayo/uupo/maglalaro lang sya sa lapag sa tapat ng seat ko. pag antok, humihiga sya sa bassinet. that's pretty much it. pag antok, medyo ma-whiny pa rin, pero pumayag syang sa bassinet matulog. i just wished we brought an overall onesies (yung may cover pati paa), kasi sinisipa ni pistoy yung socks nya, tapos ayaw nya ng blanket. eh ang lamig dun sa may bassinet seat.
Lesson # 5
if you could secure a front row seat, do it! where our seats are located made more difference, that if we booked a separate seat for pistoy, i think. kasi nung wala kaming bassinet, tumatayo si papa para si pistoy ang mag-occupy ng seat nya, pero ganon din. but with the bassinet, it's just soooo much easier.
Lesson of all Lessons:
the most important lesson of all: keep your cool. good sense of humor goes a loooong way! babies can feel their parent's anxiety. pag nagpanic na ang mommy or daddy, the baby will feel it and the cycle continues. pag umiyak ang bata, it's normal. if anybody gives you The Look, just smile back.
i'm trying to think of anything else we've learned from the actual plane trips. i think that's pretty much it. =)
next on the agenda, things learned at the place of destination. =P

budget the feeding when you are expecting just a short flight. binigay namin yung dede ni pistoy a few moments after take-off (as in yung air-borne na yung plane). we should have stopped giving him snacks, and resort to distracting him with toys, para medyo gutom pa sya by landing. oh well, we learned.
