ever since we found out i'm expecting, i am making conscious effort to NOT ASK others when it's gonna be their turn to have a baby. simply because, when i wasn't pregnant yet, that question makes me (us, actually, dahil pati si je tinatanong) feel obliged to reply, even if i know it's just a mindless question to let the conversation continue.
i think i am doing good so far. when we broke the news to friends, i probably made a slip once or twice. other than that, i'm cool.
so after the "when are you gonna have a baby?" question, we are now dealing with a new set of questions. here's a list of some of them, and what i sometimes have in mind as my reply:
When's your due date?
Real Answer: Dec 16
Pseudo Answer#1: Why, are you gonna be at the hospital on that day?
Pseudo Answer#2: Please don't count back on when we did it.
Do you want a boy or a girl?
Real Answer: Kahit boy or girl, basta healthy. Pero mas leaning towards girl ako.
Pseudo Answer#1: Gay. Kasi we can't decide what we want.
Pseudo Answer#2: Kahit ano, basta healthy, at basta boy.
Have you thought of a name yet?
Real Answer: We'll wait until we know the gender before we start exploring options.
Pseudo Answer#1: Right now we call it "pistoy". If we get too busy, we just might call it that.
Pseudo Answer#2: Yeah. we'll name it "bright light", or "lab gown", or "white mask". We want to keep Native American traditions alive.
Are you going to breastfeed?
Real Answer: Yes.
Pseudo Answer#1: No, we decided we'll give me a break and let je do it.
Pseudo Answer#2: What, and have to buy a gallon for cereal? We're using the milk for more practical reasons.
How many kids do you want?
Real Answer: Let's get through this one first, then ask me again.
Pseudo Answer#1: What kids?
Pseudo Answer#2: Just one from me. We'll just grab a couple more from the nursery before we head home. I'm sure they won't notice.

hit or miss
i have very random cravings... bukod sa isa, na consistent so far... wendy's frosty. hehe!
pakwan
...na galing sa Publix. actually i wanted the entire fruit bowl, pero mas leaning towards the pakwan ako. bumili kami sa publix near the church, after ng misa. this was 2 sundays ago. pero nung kinain namin, bleh, di matamis! at may parts pa na mapait. probably yung kutsilyo na ginamit sa pagbabalat, yun din ang ginamit sa paghiwa ng fruits. 0-1.
have it your way, no way!
that night, nag-crave naman ako for Burger King Whopper with Cheese, no onions, no pickles. je had to drive out that night to get me one. pero pagkabalik-balik ni mister, walang cheese ang dakilang whopper! na-sad ako! =( halos maiyak na sya kaka-apologize and he even wanted to go out again to get me the "right one". pero gutom na ko, so nilagyan na lang namin ng sliced cheese from the fridge, at ni-microwave ang patty. pagkagat ko... hmmm. no. it's not the same as i have it in my mind. kinain ko yung kalahati, then binigay ko na sa kanya yung natira. it's not the same. 0-2.
making it up
the next day, monday, nag-drive by ako sa Publix near our office at bumili ng fruit bowl. then nag-drive through ako sa Burger King and got my whopper with cheese. ok, nabawi na ang loss ko the day before. sarap ng kain ko! 2-2.
vietnamese beef noodle soup
and from a specific store pa ha. yung lagi naming kinakainan ng mga officemates ko. last wednesday or thursday ata to. so dun kami nagdinner ni mister, at talagang i was swimming in ecstasy and in beef broth while i was slurping away the noodles. di ko naubos, ni hindi ako nangalahati, but it was very "(ful)filling". 3-2.
yakitori, tempura and agedashi tofu
i somehow know na walang agedashi tofu sa mga japanese resto dito, or kung meron man ay ja-fake, so medyo binabaan ko ang expectations ko don. but i am certain merong ebi tempura at yakitori dito. specifically, from the sushi place na kinainan namin dati. yesterday after church, doon sana kami maglalunch, pero sarado! so punta muna kaming kfc at nagmanok muna ako. come dinner time, bukas na sila at nag-call ahead pa ko para for pick up na lang. pagdating namin sa resto, ready na! ayos! pero pag-uwi namin sa bahay, missing in action ang yakitori! we called the resto and pina-credit na lang namin sa account. since gutom na ko, yung tempura na ang nilapang ko, at yung maki na salmon tempura. hmmm. 3.5-2.
frosty (almost) everyday
wendy's chocolate frosty, na small. i have it almost every day! pag pauwi na si je, tatawag na yon sa akin. then biglang magtatanong "may papabili ka ba on my way home?" yari na. pag nagtanong sya ng ganon, i can't resist not telling him "frosty!". hehe! i shouldn't count it though, right? else, i probably should be around 13.5-2. =)

"pistoy"
as in "psst! hoy!".
at yan ang tawag namin kay baby ignacio, since di pa namin alam kung lalaki or babae sya. =P
it's kinda catchy din pala sa pandinig. sana lang wag mag-stick pag pinanganak na sya. lalo na kung babae. *lol*

i am changing
my body's changing so fast, and a lot of things are happening at what seemed like neck-breaking speed. (of course, an exaggeration, hehe!)
some things that i noticed with my body, my moods, the every day stuff that used to be, well, normal:
some things that i noticed with my body, my moods, the every day stuff that used to be, well, normal:
- bigger boobs. sorry, i have to put that first on this list. haha! as in bigger than usual. bigger than its biggest before my period, ever. and the areola and nipples seem to be growing too. and they hurt a lot, especially pag galing ako sa pagkakahiga. i might have to buy new bras na. shocks, i'm gonna be a cup B? another miracle!
- body temp. i seem to have developed a built-in body heater. kung dati, sobrang lamigin ako, ngayon hindi na. and sometimes my body gets so warm, i can feel my toes burning.
- eating habits. i can't be too full, i can't be too hungry. kahit alam kong kaya ko pang kumain, i have to stop eating, dahil i will regret it later. nagkaka-nausea ako, and yung feeling ng heart burn. pag gutom naman masyado, i burp a lot and afterwards, i will feel the nausea na rin.
- fatigue. i've never felt so useless around the house. sobrang tamad ako. gusto ko nakahiga or nakaupo lang, at humilata all day. my weekends were transformed into a eat-tv-sleep-eat-sleep-bath-eat routine. ok, insert "going to church" when it's sunday. or "going to mommy lody's place" when it's saturday and i'm in the mood to go out. hehe! if we don't have to go somewhere, you'll find me on the couch. =P
- fatigue, at work. sa office naman, i can only work a few hours a day, after that, my body feels tired and my mind can't function anymore. if i can have it my way, magha-half day lang ako everyday eh. going to work became an everyday challenge for me. parang every morning at 8pm, i ask myself, papasok ba ko? hehehe! i'm proud to say na di pa ko nag-a-absent. i usually come in late, which is ok. so, so far, so good.
- spoiled. ever since nalaman naming buntis ako, hindi pa ako nakakapaghugas ng kahit 1 kutsara or tinidor man lang. *lol* makarinig lang si je ng pinggan sa sink, papagalitan na ko. "hoy hoy hoy! ano yan?!" i don't do much than get my own spoon and fork when i'm gonna eat. or get milk or water from the fridge, or heat up my soup when i'm gonna eat, again. di ako naglalaba. di ako naglilinis ng bahay. all i have to do is point and say what i want. like having my own domesticated genie! hehehe!
- milk ritual. i am lactose intolerant. to the bones. but i'm trying to train my body to have half a glass of milk every night, with my prenatal vitamins. pag medyo naka-adjust na ang katawan ko, i might try a whole glass na. milk is like my natural laxative. like clockwork, my tummy rumbles between 6:30-7:30am. and i HAVE to get up.
- diet. i now watch what i eat. i try to avoid spicy, oily or fried foods. i try to have 2 kinds of fruits a day. my usual menu: apple, orange, banana, watermelon. i'm TRYING to cut back on chocolates. i haven't had coffee since finding out i'm expecting. and i'm fighting the urge to eat eggplant, dahil ayon sa mga matatanda, magiging kombulsyunin ang bata pag kumain ng talong ang nanay habang nagbubuntis. gaaah! ang tagal ko nang gustong kumain ng tortang talong! even before we found out!

doc#1 meeting#1
last tuesday, May 18, we went to the doc's office again. time for blood work chuva.
lots of paperwork (again!) and decisions need to be made for the screenings and tests. sobrang dami nya, at sobrang nakakapraning. bakit ganon, dito lang ba sa US maraming tests? parang ngayon ko lang narinig yung mga yon ah. =P first trimester screening, QUAD screening, HIV test, CF tests, i'm pretty sure meron pa for later. andaming babasahin! =P
nurse Nina was very patient sa pag-explain kung bakit some people opt to do the screening sa first trimester. dito daw kasi malalaman kung may Down's Syndrome ang bata. some people want options. pag may problema ang baby, they have a way out. aka, abortion. but of course the nurse didn't say the A word. as for us naman, it's not an option, kaya we declined the first trimester test. it's time sensitive kasi they can't test for that after 12 weeks. siguro para rin kung they will have the abortion, maliit pa yung baby? how sad.
we did, however, sign up for the QUAD test. it will be done around 16-19 weeks ata. it's like the first trimester screening, but with more. hehe! of course, i can't remember right now kung ano yung "more". hehehe! parang kasama ata yung sa spina bifida. we decided to go for it, kasi we thought we want to know pa rin. if there's something wrong (sana Lord wala!), we can prepare for it emotionally, mentally and financially.
the HIV test, we signed up for it din. although there's 0 chance na carrier kami. i think may discount yon sa insurance. hahaha! =P
the meeting with the doc was nice. we met the first of the 3 female docs na titingin sa akin throughout the course of the pregnancy. i like doc1, madali syang kausap and very friendly. =) andami naming tinanong, and she patiently answered each one of them as if she's explaining it for the first time in her entire career. hehe!
the consultation was pretty uneventful. i mean, considering the fact na buntis ang kukunan ng specimen for the tests. hehe!
wiwi sa cup, blood pressure, breast exam, pap smear (well, this one is an odd routine, but i gotta do what i gotta do), 6 tubes of blood. 6 tubes! ano bang itetest nyo sa akin? or idodonate nyo ba yan?! hehe!
by the time matapos kami, uhaw na ko and gutom. we were scheduled for our next appointment sa June 15. until then, di muna namin makikita si baby ignacio. awww.
and then! after the doc visit, diretso kami sa Wendy's, i gotta have my chocolate frosty! *grins*

telling je's family
dahil alfredo won't put up his own blog, ako na rin magpopost on how we told his family about the great news. hehe!
right after telling my family on the phone, we drove by a store to have the pic of the preggy test kit printed. we also got a card and signed it. we're heading over to mommy lody's place after the sunday mass to celebrate mom's day.
we dropped the cake at mommy lody's place, then we went to church muna. i was feeling fine, until siguro yung part ng "Ama Namin". the reverberating sound of the church organ probably threw me off. i started hearing a ringing sound in my ear, at unti-unti, i can feel na parang nilulubog ako sa tubig. my sight is getting dimmer. nanlalamig na ko. pero pinagpapawisan. trying to recover, umupo na ko and naglean forward. pero it didn't help. eventually, i told je i have to leave, i have to get something to eat or drink, or at least get some fresh air. akala ko mababa lang blood sugar level ko eh. we left the church and bumili si je ng soda. inom naman ako and within minutes i felt better.
wow, what was that?! power-of-suggestion-morning-sickness? hehehe! siguro it's the anxiety? whatever that was, it was weird. hehe!
then bumalik kami sandali sa loob ng church to pray and give thanks for the wonderful gift we just received. =) tapos we went to mommy lody's place na.
come lunch time at mom's house, peeps are greeting me happy mom's day. i just smile and nakisakay lang ako sa jokes nila. hehehe! just you wait! =P
then binigay na ni je yung card kay mom. she opened it, read the card and put it back in the envelope. je called out to her, "meron pa po". she took out the pic of the preggy kit and stared at it. after what seemed like forever, she shrieked with joy! haha! hindi nya pala narecognize agad yung pregnancy kit, kasi she never used one before. binasa nya pa yung nakasulat, tinignan yung line and saka lang nya nakonek. hehehe!
then it was chaos. je's brothers congratulating us, making jokes na kailangan lang palang lasingin si je para magbuntis ako. hehe! hmmm.
after that, we kind of settled down. i fell into conversations with my sisters-in-law, 2 of them already got kids, the other one is 7 months preggy.
baby ignacio will be the 4th grandchild. but the reaction of the grandparents never get old. priceless!

fast days in slow-mo
after our first meeting with baby ignacio that thursday morning, di ako mapakali. kelan ba ang next ultrasound? je even welcomed the idea of buying our own ultrasound home kit! hehehe!
there's lots of paperwork to read and fill up. the insurance stuff thankfully is not such a pain. financially speaking, mukhang manageable pa naman. to be honest, the finances is kind of the last thing on my mind. if i can buy our baby's safety and health, i would!
hmmm, ano pa nga bang nangyari since that thursday?
thursday afternoon, i told my 3 Dev teammates and my boss. i feel like they deserve to know soon. we have lots of long-term projects, and if i'll be out for at least a month and a half, they need to come up with a contingency plan. ungh! even at this state, i am still thinking about work. hehe!
friday, i went to the YuengLing brewery (i know!) with my teammates for our team building event. people were sampling the beer after the tour, and i was having rootbeer. knowing the americans who will leave you to your business unless you offer the info, nobody asked why i'm not having beer, although they know me to be a beer-drinker (bad rep, tsk tsk!). eventually, while we were having snacks at the resto across the brewery, i broke the news to the rest of the team (qa team and the others) that i'm expecting. everyone's excited. probably because i'm the only female developer, wala pa silang nakakatrabaho na lumaki ang tyan sa pagbubuntis. hehe!
saturday, we drove to orlando to meet janelle. she's in town with her cousins, and we thought, "we have to tell her in person!" besides, she's the only kada we could tell in person nga rin, so walang choice (peace janelle! hehe!). kaya talagang we travelled the ~3.5 hour drive to see her. pagkakita pa lang nya sa amin: "kamusta na? buntis ka na ba?" hahaha! di man lang talaga nag-brake eh. when we said yes, nag-amok na si janelle sa entrance ng Downtown Disney. hahaha! since may sarili silang itinerary ng cousins nya, and we don't wanna impose our sched on them, we opted to just go for ice cream and talk. it's just like the old times. hyper pa rin si janelle. hehehe!
i'm so happy that we get to tell her in person nga. the drive was worth it. =) if only i can break the news to everyone in person, i will do it. hehe!
sunday, nagsimba lang kami, punta sa bahay nila mommy lody, then stay lang sa bahay at nagtamad-tamaran. not that i'm trying to do it intentionally, pero tamad lang talaga ako lately. si je ang naglalaba, naghuhugas ng pinggan, at nagliligpit. i have to take care of cooking, else, he's gonna burn the house down. hehe!
so far, the past week has been the longest week of my life, it seems. andaming nangyari, andaming nabago, andaming info... it's overwhelming! and it's weird.
weird is nice. =)

love at first sight
as i mentioned, je and i went back to the doc's office the next day to get my first ultrasound. ok fine, we won't get any services from the doc's office unless we sign that agreement. i just have to have faith that my ob(s) won't mess up anything, like leaving a scalpel or cotton or a gauze inside me pag nagdeliver na ko. hehe!
the nurse who's manning the ultrasound machine is very friendly. she asked if it's our first and she beamed when we told her it is. i'm so glad the medical staff is not jaded. i mean, they see pregnant women every day. they've probably seen it all. but they are excited for us, and they seem genuinely happy when they congratulate us. it's nice. =) just little things that you may tend to overlook, but are priceless.
the dreadful (but surprisingly not cold!) gel on my tummy, and a few strokes here and there, and i was told i have a retroverted(?) uterus. meaning, nakabaligtad. i was worried instantly, but the nurse said it's ok and won't hurt the baby. "it's just the way you're made". huh? she pacified my worries that some women are like that, and it's perfectly normal. ok, whatever, as long as the baby's gonna be fine in my retroverted uterus chuva.
so, transvaginal ultrasound it is. please don't make me elaborate. =P
a few pokes here and there, and then we saw him/her.
he/she is floating in that little space of black on the monitor. i didn't know what to make of it at first. i even thought i was looking at a cyst or something. (stupid me!)
then the nurse pointed at the head, and at a little fluttering movement... "that's the heart beating!".
it was instant euphoria. we created life! this is our little miracle. a physical manifestation of our love for each other! it's amazing, and it's our baby! =)
as je looks at the beating heart, he lets out an expression that's somewhere between a gasp and an excited, almost shrieking exclamation of wonder. my heart was beating so fast too. i was concentrating on calming myself coz i thought i was causing the very fast heartbeat, that i missed what he said. haha! it turns out, the nurse was reading my mind. she said it's normal for a fetus to have fast heartbeat because it is still working hard to building everything. *sigh of relief again*
it's such a special moment. i never thought looking at a monitor can be that fun. hehe! even before that experience ended, i wanted to schedule another ultrasound to see our baby again! =)
the nurse then proceeded with her business. measuring the baby's length. looking around my uterus and what feels like my entire insides. she poked and poked and took snapshots. then she went back to the baby, and did a snapshot of Baby Ignacio's first picture:
it's love at first sight. =)

it was instant euphoria. we created life! this is our little miracle. a physical manifestation of our love for each other! it's amazing, and it's our baby! =)
as je looks at the beating heart, he lets out an expression that's somewhere between a gasp and an excited, almost shrieking exclamation of wonder. my heart was beating so fast too. i was concentrating on calming myself coz i thought i was causing the very fast heartbeat, that i missed what he said. haha! it turns out, the nurse was reading my mind. she said it's normal for a fetus to have fast heartbeat because it is still working hard to building everything.

the anxiety sets in
between finding out i'm pregnant through 2 home pregnancy kits, and having my first appointment with the doctor a couple of days later, the anxiety was just overwhelming.
i'm sorry, i didn't know!
aside from that, i kept overcompensating for everything i am doing. i walk slower, i don't bend down on my back. i eat a lot. the anxiety is just too much. what if it's a false positive test, twice?
and then wednesday came and we found ourselves sitting at the doc's office, undecided if we will sign the binding arbitration agreement. it took us more than an hour trying to contact people who are familiar with it. i called patsy, but they don't have that in Ohio. je called his mom, but she's not familiar with it either. our doc's appointment eventually "expired", they have to reschedule us the next day, or next week.
so that night, malou, a long time friend, along with emma, her friend, who are well versed with these law stuff, called and shed some light into our doubts about that agreement. malou's still clueless about the reason why i was at the doc's office. hehe!
so the next day, we were sitting at the doc's office again, and this time, i'm ready to sign.
and, i'm ready to find out if i am really pregnant. *grins*

telling my family
after the first test, parang di pa kami masyadong makapaniwala.
tumawag ako sa bahay and nakausap ko si eibron. ang magaling kong kapatid, binati akong "happy mother's day!". then i decided i will tell him first. i told him na wag muna magreact sa ibabalita ko, kasi nandun lang sila mama't papa sa sala, at di pa naman kasi sure talaga.
then i told him, "magiging nanay na ata ko, batiin mo kong 'happy mother's day!'". eh ang lokong si eibron sinabi ba naman "eh di happy mother's day nga!" haha! nakakatawa, gusto ko syang batukan sobra!
after a few more minutes with bron, trying to talk in puzzles, kinausap ko na si mama, na parang wala lang. hehe! i tried to be casual, and not give her any hints. then i talked to my bro again, and i told him i will call again after about an hour siguro, kasi magtetest ulet ako. if it turns out positive, sasabihin ko na kay mama. i specifically told eibron to get the camera and try to videotape mama pag sinabi na namin. pero di nya ata makita yung charger, and lowbatt na ang cam. hay nakow!
then after around 2 hours, nagtest ulet ako, positive ulet. so tumawag ulet ako sa bahay, si eibron ulet nakausap ko and i confirmed it.
i know my family has been waiting forever for me to get pregnant. although they always bug me, they respected our decision to plan it out. it's fun finally telling them they are gonna have their first grandchild.
nothing beats the feeling. =)

the princess and the "pee"
my last period was March 11-15. when i skipped April, i didn't panic, dahil alam kong meron akong 1 month sa buong taon na nagii-skip yung period ko. it usually happens pag stressed. march to april is probably one of the most stressful times of the year ko so far, dealing with work and deadlines, while preparing for a vacation in pinas. i've decided na after May 11-15 ako magpe-pregnancy test, just to be sure.
Mother's day, May 9.
nagising ako around 7am kasi nawiwiwi ako. =P naisipan kong magtest, instead of waiting after May 11. i took out the pregnancy test kit, wiwi ako sa cup, then sinawsaw ko na. agad-agad, may 1 pink line na lumabas so akala ko tapos na. nilagay ko na yung takip, tapos nilapag ko sa tabi ng tub. nagwash na ko.
maya-maya, may light pink na 2nd line. nakatitig lang ako! hahaha! sobrang shock!
tapos binasa ko ulet yung instructions.
shet! hahaha! =P
after a minute, solid na yung 2 pink lines! di ko alam gagawin ko. napadasal ako habang nakahawak sa sink.what do i do? i'm not prepared for this moment! i looked at myself in the mirror and there's a smile forming on my lips.
then labas ako ng cr, bitbit ko yung test kit. pero tulog pa si je, kaya i tried to go back to sleep din. nilagay ko sa tokador yung kit, near the bed. 30 minutes akong nakahiga lang! hahaha! di ako makatulog kahit antok na antok ako! =P
eventually, i fell asleep and woke up at 9am kasi magsisimba kami. so ginising ko na rin si je. pupungas-pungas pa sya, tapos tinanong ko "gising na ba diwa mo hon?". sabi nya "ata". hehe! i told him "kailangan mo ata akong batiin na happy mother's day. buntis ata ako!". napabalikwas si mister at napa-"di nga? talaga?!?!?" sabay hug sakin ng mahigpit. hehe! tuwang-tuwa sya at medyo nagtampo pa na bakit daw di ko sya hinintay nung nagtest ako. sabay sabi ng "subagay, mas importanteng nandun ako sa process, kesa sa test". *lol* hahaha! loko talaga! hehehe!
it's amazing how two pink lines changed that day, and the days that followed.

in-conceivable!
as far as we are concerned, the date of conception of baby ignacio was last january 2010, when we finally decided to jump into the water together, both feet in.
we have had talks about starting a family for the past year already, but we always kind of end up with a resolution that there are things we have to wait for. the house to be sold, mama's bday to pass so we won't have to travel, some expenses that we need to settle. looking back now, they all seem silly.
last january 6, we were at the Davao Marina, waiting for the boat that will take us to the davao pearl farm resort. it's morning, and we were having our mcdo drive-thru breakfast at the lobby. after a few minutes, we just fell into a conversation and somehow the conversation ended up in the family planning part.
we then decided, we'll throw caution to the wind. if i get preggy, so be it. if not, it's ok. try again. =) we made an agreement that the "baby project" should not put pressure on us. we will enjoy the moment. for me and je, that's the time we were physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually ready. as far as we are concerned, that's when we conceived the baby... when we conceived the idea, that we could be with a baby any day from that day forward.
it's the day when the mother and father were conceived, the baby just has to follow. =)
