hello toddler years

while we were putting away jecobie's "baby toys", to make room for his "toddler toys", pistoy suddenly starts playing with the baby toys, as if to say goodbye to them. the first toy he picked up is the first rattle toy that made him laugh as a baby.

is this a preview of the many "graduations" to the stages in his life? natatawa ako na naiiyak kanina. joys (and pains) of parenthood. =)

he picked up a microphone, and few more. then, he probably sensed that we're not putting away everything. so he moved on to the ones that we're leaving out, and started playing with them, as if to assure them "don't worry, i won't let mommy take you away, i'll play with you and they'll see i still like you around". *lol* tawa kami nang tawa ni je. hay naku, sa tatay pa nagmana! whenever i ask je to clear up stuff, he would reason out why he still needs it, even though i haven't seen him use the stuff for at least half a year. jecobie's the same. he hasn't touched some of the toys for months, then suddenly he is super interested.

anyway, so we took out a full 3-layer drawer of toys, and some small stuffed toys. pistoy is never a stuff toy kind of kid. he never had a lovey either. we just kept the big ones that he says good night to, like puppy dog, bunny and giraffe. wait, those are not common nouns, those are their names. =P

as the year ends, i feel like we need to sort out a lot stuff. his old baby clothes are in a box in the room's "attic". i recently retired a lot of clothes too. i need to organize them into boxes in case we need them in the future.

anyway, after the toy ordeal is done, jecobie just went to his pillow, lied down belly first, and fell asleep. he probably wanted to sleep the sadness off. well, we're not putting the toys away to the attic, we're just moving it to the guest bedroom. it will be accessible and easy to get to if we need to bring out toys when we have guests with kids. and of course, when jecobie misses his baby toys. or mommy/daddy misses seeing jecobie with his baby toys. whichever comes first. =P

second year

i totally missed updating this blog. primarily due to the numerous things in the way, like work, household chores, preps for holidays and parties and papa's exodus, and general laziness and procrastination. =P

we recently celebrated pistoy's 2nd birthday. last Dec.8, 54 people packing inside our home and parteyed until Pacquiao hit the canvass face-first. =P yep, since we got food, and people are coming over, we decided to hold the pacquiao-fight-viewing at our place too. =)

updates.....

counting
pistoy can "sort of" count 1-10 na! well, technically, he can recite the numbers in order from 1 to 10. when there are pictures of anything you want him to count, you need to be the one to point to the items, and he will count until your fingers pause on the last item. if you try to make him count on his own, he will point to one item, lose his focus, point to another item which is far from the one he just counted, and then lose his place. he will then be counting endlessly. *lol* it took us a while to realize this. hahaha!

potential yaya
one of our pinoy friend's (billy) mother is available to watch over kids during the weekdays. last May lang sya nag-move dito sa US, and nag-aalaga lang sya ng mga apo nya. kinapalan na naman ang face namin at humingi ng favor if she can watch over pistoy for 4-5 hours twice a week. the set-up would be daddy je will drop pistoy off at their place before heading to work (11-ish), and i will pick him up after work (4-ish). we seriously don't know the going rate for babysitters in our area, but since this is just a sort of "to pass time" thing since she's just at home watching tv during the day, we figured we could probably go a few dollars less than the real going rate? that's my cheap side talking, but at this point, we will definitely pay whatever's the rate just to have someone who speaks Tagalog, who has the same Filipino values, and whom we know and can trust to watch over pistoy.

last week, we spent 3 days at their place around the time when we'll leave him. daddy je or i were there, just to help pistoy familiarize himself with the place and "lola grace". kilala kasi namin siya, once he gets traumatized sa isang lugar or isang tao, he won't trust them anymore. so we erred on the side of caution and sacrificed 3 days. on the third day, i left the house and stayed outside for an hour to see how he'd take it. sabi ni lola grace, hindi naman daw ako hinanap. umupo lang sa rocking chair, nanood ng eat bulaga, at kumain ng goldfish. pistoy was trying to get comfortable on the floor for his afternoon nap when i went back in. he seemed so happy to see me, kwento nang kwento na di ko naman ma-gets. hehehe! then we drove back home and he seemed ok.

it really looks promising. i know i probably shouldn't post about this or i'll jinx it. but i also want to ask for help to pray for pistoy to be comfortable enough around lola grace. and, with the long Christmas break, i hope the 3 days last week are not for nothing. =P

hitting
this is my biggest issue with pistoy recently. he learned how to hit. how, i'm not sure, but i have an idea. pag nadadapa kasi si pistoy, or tumatama somewhere, papa norbie will hit the "offending" area (the floor, the chair, etc) and say "ump!". sanay naman tayo sa ganon, sa pinas kasi yun ang usual na ginagawa right? but then, pistoy misunderstood the context. he thought anything that displeases him deserves to be hit. *gawd, heaven help us reverse this!*

we're trying the "firm voice, say 'no hitting'" thing. since pistoy is used to us being all "verbal" when he's behaving well, once he hits, we say "no hitting", holds his hands tight in front of him, pauses and won't talk to him for a few seconds. then we follow up with "magsorry ka na, kiss mo <insert hitting victim here>". he would kiss, but he won't say sorry.

i don't know what else to do!

momma janey and daddy oneal witnessed this when we went out to dinner at Orlando. we were in the van, oneal said or did something (i can't remember), and jecobie hits him! it's so frustrating to us too... he would make amends later, but it doesn't make him stop from hitting in the first place!

he hits just for the motion of it, i think. he doesn't hit hard naman. but still, it's hitting! nung nakausap ko si papa about this, sabi ko this is his fault. =P sabi nya ilalakad nya daw ng paluhod at ipagdadasal nya na tumigil na. in the meantime, we need a method that works. not for reactive results, but proactive.

bday party
so. whatever happened in the 1 week before Dec.8, i have blurred memories na. all i know is i cooked leche flan, crema de fruta, chicken sopas, menudo and lumpiang shanghai. papa cooked his signature beef with mushroom, and ribs with tausi. i ordered pizza, chicken wings, pansit bihon and dinuguan. we ordered a small half-marble-half-chocolate cake with buttercream icing and a circus train topper. =) jecobie loved the toy train topper btw. hehehe! perfect choice!

on the day itself, we prepped everything ourselves, even blowing the balloons! well, we got the kit with the helium tank, but still, we did the tying and stuff. =)

it was fun, both the preps and the party itself. i just wish we had more time to prepare. andami ko tuloy nakalimutang ilabas agad. like yung crema de fruta, at yung sopas nakalimutan kong banggitin sa iba. we left the sopas kasi sa range, so it stays warm.

speaking of staying warm, i will have to invest in food warmers eventually. especially since december ang bday ni pistoy. heheheh! buti na lang, lahat ng guests namin ay family, ka-close, at mga cowboys. so when they get their food, their just march over to our microwave and reheat it. not the perfect way to serve food at parties. =P either we get the food warmer na sinasaksak, or yung nilalagyan ng flame sa ilalim. hay, buhay domesticated. nag-iiba na ang problema. i never thought i would be thinking about those things in the past. it's like something that i'll leave mommy letty or mama ayet to worry about. heheheh!

as i mentioned, since we didn't have that much time to prepare, when the guests came in, it slipped my mind to bring the camera out. naalala na lang namin nung magbo-blow na ng candles. =( chinarge ko pa naman lahat ng spare batteries ng camera namin. loss! so meron lang kaming 2 vids nung cake time na. di ko man lang na-picture-an yung set up ng pagkain. how i miss my mama who are usually on top of things like that. ewan ko rin naman dito sa US, parang hindi mahilig mag-pic ang mga tao. *lol*

so. exactly 2 years and 2 weeks na si pistoy as of this writing. we planned on starting his potty training this long weekend, but we have a lot of stuff to take care of pa rin, kaya we decided to postpone it. as of today, pistoy says "pupu" when he's done. but he won't say when he's going. you can kind of tell though, he runs around a lot, with the shoulders kind of hunched. tapos maririnig mo syang umiire. the good thing is, umuupo na sya sa toilet seat ngayon pag hinuhugasan. twice he sat  there and tried to poop, pero after a few minutes ayaw na. siguro namimintig ang paa nya. hehe!

that reminds me, we need to get him a step stool for wiwi-training. it's gonna be a looong journey, but we're not in a hurry. =P he'll eventually get there.

first sign of terrible two

pistoy had some sort of a meltdown last Saturday (11/17), while we were at a surprise bday part for my sis-in-law's dad.

jecobie didn't take a nap that afternoon, so he was already cranky to begin with at around 5pm (when the party started). we know it's only a matter of time before he'd explode.hehehe!

our nephew jude, was solving puzzles sa ipad nya. jecobie wants to do it too! nakikipindot! so i took out my kindle fire and loaded an animal puzzles app. while jecobie is solving a puzzle, jude joined in. pistoy suddenly screamed, held on to the kindle, and tried his best para hindi makahawak si jude. medyo hindi naiintindihan ni jude ang "no", so para kaming umaawat sa sabong. hehehe! jude keeps poking on the tablet, pistoy keeps screaming "no" (more like "wo" pa nga). pistoy finally cried buckets, and kuya pete finally subdued jude.

of course, there's a million suggestions from everybody around the table on what we have to do. i think i was more stressed by the comments from other people, than actually dealing with pistoy's meltdown. =P

we know at some point, this is going to happen. pistoy will meet a playmate who will not respect his ownership of things. welcome to the real world anak. =P in this jungle, even if you own something, it doesn't mean other people won't try to take it away from you. =P

at home, we're teaching pistoy how to share and take turns. he really is at that stage where everything is his. he used to cry when we play with (even just touch actually!) the toy train we bought him. we would say "share"... then say "pistoy's turn" and let him play. then we'll say "mommy's turn" and i'll touch the train for a very brief moment. when it's "pistoy's turn", i won't touch the toy. after around a dozen rounds, he finally got the concept.

the problem with the situation last saturday was, even when we're saying it's "pistoy's turn", jude was touching the toy. *lol* so maybe in jecobie's mind, "hey, that's not fair! it's my turn!". so when we're saying it's "jude's turn", pistoy won't let the kindle go. it wasn't really the perfect application of the "lessons" we were trying to teach him.

anyway, since then, jecobie would shout "wo!" when he doesn't want to do something. it's irritating! we try to pick our battles, but maybe it's time to bring out the stick. =P (or clear up the corner, in case we're just doing timeouts for now).

*sigh* this is another thing. i don't like punishing. but anyway, we gotta do what we gotta do.

so je and i had a brief talk that maybe next year, we need to enroll pistoy sa isang playcenter or something, so he can break into the social aspect of play. most of the time, he's ok when he's playing with grown-ups. he would even initiate by bringing his toys to them.

for now, the best we can do is bring him to playgrounds and parks where a lot of kids are also playing.

Lord help us! =)

22nd-ish month updates

guy talk
it must be a guy thing, but hubby je could understand jecobie's "sentences"!

a few days ago, they were sitting on the floor mat sa family room when jecobie pointed at the ceiling fan and said something like "nana, tsukoy-tsukoy-tikoti-kot".

translation? "ceiling fan is off".

breakdown:
nana = wala na.
tikoti-kot = ikot-ikot

also a few days ago, he said the same thing when his toy uod's wheels stopped spinning. we went crazy when we realized what he was saying! hehehe!

then yesterday, at the park, we went to see the ducks sa man-made lake, and he kept saying "kakakak tukuy an dede".

translation? "may ducks sa tubig".

breakdown:
kakakak = duck
dede = anything liquid, ergo, tubig is counted.

it's weird that je understands it and can decrypt pistoy's sentences. i dunno where the extra words came from, maybe because we use complete sentences when talking to him. so this is his version of stringing together 2 words, may palabok sa gitna. hehehe! ano bang tawag sa ganon, linking verb ba?

alphabet
pistoy can identify letters A, B, C, D, F, H and I! nalilito sya sa E (says it's F), G (says "ata" for gitara, because the book has a picture of guitar for that letter), and J (sometimes says I). i bought a board book (The Alphabet Room) and we started going through it a month ago. every page has a flip-the-page part. we don't do that yet because it can get confusing for him. so we just flip through the regular pages, and he can identify almost all the pictures. of course buyoy pa rin. but he says things consistently naman, hehe!

he can identify and say the names of apple, bowl, dog, egg, fish, guitar (ata for gitara), hat, kite, moustache (tash! hahaha!), owl, painting (pe-te), quilt (ki), snake (ek), umbrella, (ana), violin (baoin), zebra (aba). i love that book, simple lang ng illustrations. and very colorful too. pistoy would sometimes point to the background of the pic and say the name of the color. hehe!

he can identify the other animals, but instead of saying their names, he mimics yung sinasabi nila, like meow for cat, and baaa for lamb.

inglisero
today, pistoy had a haircut, and it's the first time he cried. siguro natatakot sya dun sa hairstylist kasi salita nang salita ng english. eh pinoy na pinoy si pistoy. he gets confused pag puro english ang naririnig nya.

i'm worried na pag kinailangan na namin syang ipasok sa daycare or school, he will have a hard time adjusting. but i still refuse to teach him english, maybe just expose him to it some more. hay.

UPDATES:
i realized na i started this entry more than a month ago, pero di ko pala natapos.

as of pistoy's 22nd month, he can identify all the (uppercase) letters of the alphabet!!! i'm one proud momma! hehehe! i dunno how he looks at things, pero parang multi-dimentional nya narerecognize ang mga bagay. recently, he pointed to a small letter "b" and said "P!" *lol* kaya naman the first time he saw the alphabet train sa youtube, he called "W" an "M". that was before the time he can identify them all.

ang last letter na natutunan ni pistoy is "U". at tuwang tuwa kami sa "W" nya... "ba-du"! heheheh!

also, pistoy can identify the numbers 1-9! there's a certain font type na mas madali nyang marecognize yung numbers. of course, 6 and 9 are hit-or-miss most of the time. hehehe! i guess nagbunga ang madalas naming magpunta sa walmart at target, kasi ang lalaki ng mga price tags dun. =P

yesterday pala, nagsusulat sila ni papa sa driveway with a chalk. papa drew "3" and asked pistoy kung ano yon. jecobie said "M!" tawa kami ni papa! so binuhat sya ni papa para nakaharap sa number, but pistoy corrected himself "W!" *lol*

recently he's obsessed with trains and trucks. anything na pwedeng i-line up at itulak sunod-sunod, train na. =P hubby je taught him that. and it's actually nice kasi he's using his imagination. kaya we're refraining from buying him a toy train. well, more like hubby je is refraining. ako medyo gusto ko para pag nasa labas kami, pwede nyang bitbitin yung totoong train. ngayon yung toy truck nya ang lagi nyang bitbit.

anyway, i'm thinking maybe we could do a train-themed 2nd bday party. at least yung design sa cake and yung happy bday banner, train ang design. i don't know if we'll have goody bags for the kids. kung sa pinas sana, go ako dyan dahil nandyan lang ang baclaran, quiapo at divisoria. pero dito kasi parang namamahalan ako. or siguro kasi we're not doing well financially kaya mas highlighted na ang bawat $1. hehe!

updates, atbp.

colors
the best $1 investment = Crayola's Colors board book

3 weeks ago, we were at Target and we passed by the $1-item racks. i saw this board book about colors, and since it's just a dollar, i didn't have second thoughts throwing it into our cart.

pistoy's one and only colors board book only had blue, red, green, yellow and orange. and that book costs $10! anyway, this $1 book has all 8 basic colors, plus pink and white! nothing fancy, just 1 color per page.

why are board books so freakin' expensive! if they were able to publish a $1 board book, why can't the others do the same? why does education have to cost so much, from the 3-page baby books, to the board books, to costs of private schools and eventually college!

anyway, the $1 paid off! =P jecobie knows the 8 basic colors now! he surprised us all when he started "saying" the names last week. we were in chaos at home! =P

super bulol pa, but we were able to "decrypt" his code:
bra = brown
gi = green
bu = blue
insh = orange
purpo = purple
ba = black
o = yellow (je said it used to be something like "owo")
apa = red (don't ask me why. =P )

we were able to take a vid of jecobie reciting the colors when we show him the color markers (which we bought as a buy 1, get 1 deal). i uploaded it to my fb account. mama ayet has been bugging me to post pistoy vids, because papa norbie kept bragging to her about pistoy's latest "tricks". last time i talked to her, she said now she regrets not coming with papa. hehehe! =P

good job jecobie! we're so proud of you! *embrace-embrace!*

shapes
pistoy knows how to name some shapes now!
curco = circle
avo = oval
gago/gagon = pentagon
ish = star
ske = square
crocs = cross
art = heart
badede = triangle

he still gets a little confused with "rectangle" because it looks like a square. =P and we don't know what happened to his "triangle", he used to be able to say "taugu" which sound a little closer to triangle. hehe! now he says the same thing when he's refering to "butterfly", which is also "badede" in his vocab. *lol* i'm starting to think that any 3-syllable word to him is "badede". hahaha!

selective dyslexia
and we also think he is dyslexic with the letter "a". =P he calls "unan" as "anu", his "oval" as "avo". *lol* one time he kept saying "anu! anu!" and we can't understand him. then he picked up his pillow and said "anu!". i don't know how daddy je understood "anu" as "unan" right away. pareho ata silang mag-isip ni pistoy, laging sila ang nagkakaintindihan. patay tayo dyan!

run pistoy run!
pistoy also suddenly turned into this running machine! we used to be able to do grocery shopping with him just sitting on the cart. now he wants to go down, and run run run! he would run up and down the aisles. we always try to catch up with him, because he could get run over by other people's carts when they're not expecting a little kid to emerge out of an aisle at full speed. or maybe some people might be in a hurry, or not paying attention. needless to say, kami ang mas pagod pag sinasama namin si pistoy sa stores. on the flip side, alam namin na if we want to tire him out, just bring him to a store and he would run off his energy. hehe!

on a side note:
i think we know what jecobie will be sa halloween. we'll paint him blue. and he'll be MegaMind! *lol* je and i were watching that movie when it hit me, and i had a hard time completing my sentence because i can picture pistoy really pulling it off. hahaha! mean mom! =P

reminder to myself

i've had my share of growing up in a house where people scream at each other in the heat of arguments. when emotions run high, adults tend to forget that kids are not supposed to see those ugly stuff.

i am writing this post to remind myself, that i will strive to the best of my abilities to raise jecobie in a household free of those screaming bouts. i just don't want him to witness, and later remember things like that.

sweet child o' mine

i just have to blog about this, so i will have something to look back to when (or if) pistoy hits that stage when he's turned into a little monster. =P

pistoy goes to the office with daddy je, and gets the chance to play with the 2 other kids. je told me stories of how pistoy will share his toys with people. iaabot nya yung toys nya, as if to say "here, you can play with this!". i'm glad that he knows how to share.

i know the time will come na it will be "all-mine" stage. but for now, at least we know pistoy knows how to share.

at isa pa, hindi nang-aagaw ng toys si jecobie. if the kid is playing with a toy he wants, he will just look, and wait for his turn. he never grabs it away from the kid. he doesn't cry for it. he patiently waits. then pag binitawan na ng kalaro nya, he will pick it up and play with it.

i had the chance to witness this first hand yesterday when we were at the playground at the mall. there is this one raised/platformed area where there's a wall with puzzles. a little kid (we later found out he's thai, he's 14 months old, doesn't walk yet, and his name is "San" or something like that) was playing in that area. jecobie just stood by the platform, looking at the puzzle. once the kid got down, jecobie climbed up the platform and started playing with the puzzle. he looked back at us and smiled that happy smile. i feel a surge of pride that my kid is good-natured and kind. =) maybe people will mistake that for shyness, but for me, it's much more than that. (shempre proud mommy ako eh. hehe!)

when the kid came back and climbed up the platform to play with the puzzle again, jecobie moved on to another toy puzzle on the other side of the wall! he would look at the kid, as if waiting for him to finish playing, but he stayed on that other puzzle and played there. at this point, i can't be any more proud of him! =)

pistoy is also very affectionate. when he's happy about something, he gives you a kiss. when je and i are both present, when he kisses daddy, he would also kiss mommy, and vice versa. i remember, when mama and papa were here, pistoy would kiss one of us, and kiss everybody present. hindi yung 1 tao lang. at talagang tatawagin ka pa! hehe! *kisses daddy, then shouts "mama!", then kisses me too* so je and i try to be there for him when he calls out for us to give us a kiss. we drop whatever we're doing to walk over and claim our kiss. =) it just melts my heart.

at times it becomes sort of inconvenient, because he gives multiple kisses! *lol* so he would kiss daddy, call me, i drop my (for example) dishwashing duties to walk over and get my kiss. then i walk back to the sink. as soon as i got back, he's kissing daddy again, and calling me out again! *lol* we work around that one by carrying him over when one of us is busy. i tell you, it's the good kind of inconvenience. =P

i hope he stays the sweet little kid that he is. =)
