plan C

time for plan C.

original plan was direct breastfeeding.
plan B was pumping breastmilk, and giving formula in between.

since jecobie seemed fussier and gasier (?) with formula, i've sort of resurrected my Plan A, with some modifications. i want to pump breastmilk and bottle-feed si pistoy, exclusively. i wanted to get rid of formula altogether. it's heartbreaking to see him writhe in pain, grunting until he's red in the face, and crying because of discomfort.

we've tried similac advance, similac sensitive, gerber good start, and similar isomil. wala pa atang kinahihiyangan si pistoy. the pedia wanted us to try different types and brands muna, dahil it doesn't sound like food allergy naman daw, kaya ayaw nya munang ilagay si jecobie sa alimentum. *sigh* pero kitang kita talaga ang difference pag breastmilk at formula ang kinakain nya. i've seen jecobie vomit (hindi lang spit-up, vomit talaga na projectile) after formula feeding. nakakaawa sobra. minsan, he's got that look on his face na gutom na gutom na sya, pero parang ayaw na nyang kumain kasi sumasakit sikmura nya. =(

anyway, so i've been reading about pumping, and basically it's the same concept as direct feeding daw: "empty the breast often to increase supply". pump as often as possible. preferably, double pumping. prolong pumping by 5 minutes after the last drop of milk was pumped out. i have to work doubly hard to empty my breasts, dahil pumps are not as effective as the direct sucking of babies.

i have to pump every 1.5 to 2 hours, for 15-20 minutes, round the clock, for at least 4 days. then hopefully by then, may makita na akong improvement. never go longer than 4 hours without pumping daw.

i've come to this decision while i was crying inside the bathroom because jecobie refuses my breast na dahil halos wala na syang makuha, after 2 consecutive direct feedings, spaced 2 hours apart. 2 consecutive feedings lang, di na maka-keep up yung milk supply ko.everyday, nakakapag-pump ako ng around 300ml total lang. i have to do something to get him out of formula. it was my fault, di ako nag-pa-pump as often kaya di nag-improve yung supply ko.

i have to make it up to pistoy. he deserves nothing but the best.

  1. i know how it feels to not be able to give what you know your baby needs.. i would cry almost everytime =( when i started pumping, i was pumping every 2 hours kahit walang lumalabas na milk.. then i would pump for 30 minutes and few minutes more after wala ng lumalabas just to make sure na pigang piga na..

i never even got to the amount you're getting so we really had to supplement with formula.. enfamil enfacare lipil yung gamit namin for eidan.. you can try the same brand if you still want to.. i know meron din silang type na for babies na allergic sa cow's milk.. http://www.enfamil.com/app/iwp/enfamil/certificate.do?dm=enf&id=/Consumer_Home3/Offers/Nutramigensample&iwpst=B2C&ls=0&csred=1&r=3472605818

we're keeping pistoy in our prayers para mag-improve na yung pagkain nya.. *hugs*

  2. i felt the same way too harbs... t'was really frustrating. Di nga kami nagkasundo ni Ryk sa breastfeeding, never sya nag latch. Puro pump lang din ako pero talagang wla akong gatas. Halos magpakalunod ako sa mga soup, esp clam soup pro wa effect :( i even tried the malunggay capsule or even the real malunggay leaf. Di tlga ko magatas kaya he ended up drinking formula na lang talaga, trial and error din kung san sya mahiyang. I guess, ganyan tlga so don't feel too bad of yourself kasi di ka nagiisa. Let's hope for the best na lang and keep on trying and praying. Mwah!!

  3. sounds like a good plan. (the pump schedule).. ilang weeks old na ba si pistoy?

mahirap talaga tanggalin ang formula, once you've started it. ilang bote pa ba in a day si pistoy?

i still say to just latch and latch. imagine, if you just gave him your boobs since giving birth, malamang naestablish na milk supply mo by this time. *sermon ends here*

    p.s.
*hugs* for your crying session. no use crying over non-existing milk. LOL. nagjojoke langggggg pooooo para marelaks ka lang hehehe. *mwah*

  4. ay, and i heard this from a friend: that successful breastfeeding is how one mother defines it for herself, not if you exclusively breastfed or how much milk you have frozen.

    *hugs*

  5. thanks for the support guys!

loss ang first attempt ko. i skipped almost 12 hours dahil sa pag-aalaga kay pistoy sa madaling araw, then nakatulog ako nung natulog din sya. *sigh* i'm restarting again today @ 9am. i'm sure 11 am will come sooner than i expect.

@gewi, thanks for the short sermon. i know, i know. sige, for next time. next time daw, aray!

@janey, mare, 300 ml for the entire day na yon ha, hindi in 1 pump. dumating ako sa point na 120ml pag sa umaga (after a 6 hour no-pump period), pero nag-decrease eventually.

@arvs, mahirap talaga pag baby mismo ang di naglalatch eh. at least si pistoy naglalatch naman sya ng tama pag gutom. pero pag wala na syang makuha, niluluwa nya eh, kahit gutom pa sya.

  6. btw, pistoy is at 5 weeks going on 6 this thursday. so far, 12 feedings sya in a day... 7-8 feedings ang formula, 4-5 ang breastmilk. each feeding nya is 60-70 ml, depende kung gaano katagal yung last na feeding nya. minsan kasi he can go on more than 2 hours, minsan naman as soon as 1 hour.

  7. sabi naman sa kellymom, talagang .5 -2oz lang ang usual sa isang pumping session eh.. so your total is not far off harbie.. (nalilito ako sa ml, oz kasi lagi tingin ko)..

i think 60ml is enough per session (nag google pa ko kung ano conversion lol).. si binog hanggang ngayon ganun lang eh..

sabi rin sa kellymom, tag isang oz daw ang pag wean ng formula, if you want to wean. so maybe you can try that.

i hope you find the hiyang formula soon.

  8. Harbs, I feel u. Buti ka pa nga may lumalabas. Ako barely mabasa ung bottom ng medela bottle. The lactation consultant even visited me para magturo. She suggested to take "fenugreek" capsules. All naturals to. A lot of moms swear by this and that their milk supply increases by 100% or more. Only side effect is your sweat smells like maple syrup :) It did not work for me, pero baka sayo magwork. I was taking malunggay tablets, too kasabay nung fenugreek.

Good luck! Kaya mo yan. Trial and error din talaga ang formula feeding. Similac Sensitive kami ngaun which works well with her kc gassy sya sa Similac Advance. A gassy baby is much worse than a baby with fever or colds. *hugs*

  9. @liza, OTC naman yung fenugreek capsules di ba? i'll try it next week, so far parang nag-i-improve naman yung supply ko by pumping. so far, so good. i just gotta have more discipline, kasi nagiging every 4 hours yung every 2 dapat eh. =P

  10. yup.. fenugreek is over the counter beng.. it worked for me.. before that, i was taking reglan (not sure kung tama yung spelling ng name.. hehe.. nasa blog ko somewhere).. but that one is not OTC..

di naman ako nangamoy maple.. yung wiwi lang.. hahaha! =D
